🚨🎙️ Xabi Alonso furious after Chelsea’s 2–0 defeat to Tottenham: “Mateus Fernandes should have been punished for what he did to Cole Palmer. The officiating today was SHOCKING!”
Reporter: Xabi, there was controversy surrounding Mateus Fernandes and Cole Palmer. Do you believe the referee got the decision wrong?
Xabi Alonso: 🗣️ “Absolutely. I’m extremely frustrated with the officiating today. Mateus Fernandes fouled Palmer, Palmer stayed on his feet, and then Fernandes went on to handle the ball with his hand. So what exactly are we supposed to do? Wait for a Chelsea player to fall dramatically before the referee decides something has happened?
“That’s what makes me angry. Palmer tried to stay on his feet, and somehow that almost worked against him. Then you have the handball incident, and we’re left asking why the situation wasn’t properly punished. If the referee believes an offence meets the criteria for a red card, he has to make that decision regardless of which team is involved.
“And it wasn’t just that incident. There were several fouls throughout the match that I felt should have been called. Challenges were going unpunished, our players were being knocked off the ball, and the game was allowed to become more physical than it needed to be. The standard of officiating was nowhere near what I expect at this level.
Reporter: Do you feel the referee was favouring Tottenham?
Xabi Alonso: 🗣️ “I’m not going to pretend I know what was going through the referee’s mind, but I cannot understand some of the decisions we saw today. When important calls keep going against your team, naturally you start asking questions.
“Was Tottenham getting the benefit of the doubt? From where I was standing, it certainly felt that way. I’m not accusing anyone of deliberately helping them, but the inconsistency was frustrating. We deserved the same protection and the same standards as our opponents.
“My players work all week preparing for these matches. We analyse our opponents, work on our tactics and expect the game to be decided by football. We shouldn’t have to spend the afternoon wondering whether the same rules are being applied to both teams.
“If Palmer had gone down immediately instead of trying to stay on his feet, would the incident have been treated differently? That’s a question the officials need to answer. Players shouldn’t have to exaggerate contact to get a decision.
“I’m angry because this was a big game, and the officiating was simply not good enough in my opinion. Chelsea cannot accept that standard and pretend everything was fine. The referee has to be accountable for the major decisions, because they can change the course of a match.”

However, it was a tie between Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal. The Ballon d’or organization waited till the El Classico to decide the winner. Lamine Yamal was pocketed by Cucurella for 90 mins. Mbappe scored two goals, this has made the decision easier for the organization to give Mbappe the award.
One thing Hansi Flick should understand is that you can't play high intensity football all season long.
You will have to play without intensity at some point, that is when your defense comes in.
In situations when you can't press to win back the ball, solid CBs will make sure the striker do not get to the ball before them.
