🚨 President suspected of espionage: major scandal erupts in Slovenia

Nataša Pirc Musar has come under suspicion over alleged ties to Russian intelligence, while the ruling party is already demanding that the president be denied access to classified intelligence briefings.

It all started with an ordinary car accident. It turned out that Pirc Musar was traveling with a Russian friend who is linked to a former deputy head of Slovenian intelligence who fled to Russia back in the 1990s.

Parliament’s security commission called an emergency meeting and demanded that the intelligence services provide a report on possible Russian influence within the president’s inner circle.

Attention has also turned to Pirc Musar’s own trips to Russia. Despite publicly criticizing Russia’s invasion, she regularly visited Moscow and St. Petersburg — including shortly before the start of the full-scale war.

Gillian Tett, journalist: Remember what happened in Chechnya? Russians went in once, flattened the place, everyone said “peace.”

Russians withdrew, got beaten back as well. Everyone said, “Peace works.” Chechnya, meanwhile, was completely defenseless.

Russians waited few years, went back in again, and operated in even more brutal fashion. They flattened it even worse.

Then Russians went back in third time, and there was horrific killing. That’s a brutal and ghastly story from Russia’s past.

I would love to believe that Russia is about to sign some peace deal. But the reality is that Russia only respects strength.

“This is really heartbreaking sight when you have equipment, but not able to intercept any missiles.

This is very sad when you know that ballistic missiles are flying over your head and you are not able to do anything about it, and you know that there are citizens behind you.

It's psychically impossible for them. They can't be in a world where people are actually taking real risks for real things.

That would be too much for them. They can't be in a place where there is courage.

That would be opposed to just manipulating the rest of us with words, which is designed to make them look tough.

They'd never take any risk for anything themselves. They believe that all talk of patriotism, democracy is just for show.

These are people who fundamentally will just tell you what you want to hear in order to get what they want personally.

For them, whole idea of democracy, and even national sovereignty, is all just a joke, right? Just a means to an end.

When they're confronted by others for whom democracy or national sovereignty isn't a joke, who would fight for freedom.

Not just use words like "fight for freedom," but who would, like Ukraine, do it, when they're confronted and are doing it.

Have been doing it for 4 and a half years now, they don't have a way to respond besides scorn, spite, and dismissal.

That's the only thing they can do, because they're in a world where those are all words, and it's all just words.

When they're confronted with actual human beings, men and women who are actually taking risks, they're helpless.

They have to get that topic off the table. They're only comfortable in a world where everybody is venal and hypocritical.

Where everybody lies all the time. And so I think that's the fundamental thing: it's just really uncomfortable for them.
