Last Friday, I had the incredible opportunity to showcase two of my games, Typhoon Dragoon and Lighthouse Vigil (soon on Steam!), at the Tokyo Game Bridge Tokyo Game Show Community Fest.
Watching people step into worlds we created was both surreal and humbling. To everyone who played, shared their thoughts, found problems, or simply stopped to talk with us: deeply and genuinely thank you!
I first began imagining Typhoon 13 years ago, as a series I want to finish before I die.
Then, I had called it "my very own Final Fantasy".
Since then, it has been shaped by everything I have ever loved about video games, anime, Japanese culture (🇯🇵), my country's own culture (🇧🇷), life, people and the beauty of the world we live in (even Serbia! 🇷🇸), going all the way back to the trusty NES I was gifted by my father when I was five, where my life as a gamer had begun.
Typhoon Dragoon is only one part of the much greater world I hope to build. It's a smaller episode of the epic series I would like to one day see finalized, but it is derived from one single event that changed my life permanently.
In 2018, I suffered an accident that, during a surgery, according to the doctors, took my life for around five minutes.
To me, it felt like three months.
Dragoon is, in part, my attempt to give form to what I experienced during that time, and to the strange place I saw.
It is the greatest and most ambitious creation I have ever undertaken. It will take years to fully realize, but the sooner we can put it into the hands of real players, to test it, challenge it, and break it, the stronger it will become. And the more confident we will be that we can bring this vision fully to life.
Ever since I started reviewing video games (15 years ago!), I was an advocate for developers listening to real, true lovers of the medium. People who grew up playing the games we love - Zelda, Pokémon, Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, and much more, especially those who have become disappointed with the current state of the video game industry and its perceived need to please people who were never part of its core audience, and following trends that lead nowhere but the farthest possible from where fans are.
So I would like to honor the fans of the genre, by trying myself to make The Ultimate RPG game.
My heartfelt thanks to Matthew Moss for giving us this incredible opportunity, and to everyone at Tokyo Game Bridge and Le Wagon Tokyo who made the event possible.
Thank you to @ricardomenin, who recently joined me in bringing the 3D world of Typhoon Dragoon to life.
And thank you to @pangami/@itspangami, the source of my unbounded and limitless strength, who has begun her own journey with Typhoon as a narrative designer and co-developer.
