Almost everyone who has talked about peace and compromise has been branded, without nuance, “pro-Russian” — by the government, its media, and its experts.Any realistic terms for peace: “pro-Russian”. Criticism of Zelenskyy, of corruption, of official inaction: also “pro-Russian”. Then it is your own view. Then other parties. Then foreign journalists.
Tucker Carlson is “pro-Russian” because he interviewed Putin. Few people know he asked Zelenskyy for an interview much earlier. Zelenskyy will not sit with him. Tucker is unpredictable. You have to be ready to argue. Zelenskyy wants a soft interview — a warm bath.
Elon Musk opened humanitarian corridors out of Mariupol and still provides Starlink to the front. When he is inconvenient, he is “pro-Russian”. When he is useful, he is a “friend of Ukraine” again. Trump laid out a logic for ending the war — and was piled on. The president of Czechia said Ukraine needs peace — and was hounded.
The same script has been used on a whole list of politicians and countries. The only “correct” position is this: stay quiet about corruption, keep escalating the rhetoric and the strikes, and leave civilians almost unprotected. Hunt down anyone who steps out of line. By that logic, anyone can become “pro-Russian”.
The hard truth is simpler. Sooner or later, there will have to be a conversation with Russia. Otherwise diplomacy does not win. And without air defense for civilians, in year five of the war, with crushing corruption, it is ordinary Ukrainians who will keep paying for this war in blood.
