Wieder Wohnhäuser in Kyjiw getroffen, wieder Tote.

Over this past week, Russia used around 2,200 attack drones against Ukraine, more than 1,730 guided aerial bombs, and 106 missiles of various types, nearly half of them ballistic. Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Kharkiv, and Dnipro, as well as our border and frontline communities, are under fire almost every day. There was a massive strike on Kyiv that claimed the lives of 31 people and injured another 102, including four children. My condolences to their families and loved ones.
Every day, we must protect lives from these attacks. We already have the capabilities to effectively shoot down more than 90% of drones, but, unfortunately, not all ballistic missiles are intercepted. And it is ballistic missiles that Moscow is now leaning on to continue its war. And every day, we are working to strengthen air defense for Ukraine: through PURL and through our bilateral contacts with countries that have not joined PURL but do have the missiles we so urgently need. We are also strengthening our air defense through joint work with Europeans on anti-ballistic capabilities. We need answers from our partners to our requests for air defense. Every package of interceptor missiles provides real protection for lives. I thank all leaders who are finding ways to help in this particular area.
Personal commentary: In an interview published today in BILD, Germany’s Minister of Defence, Boris Pistorius, claims that he does not believe Ukraine still needs Taurus KEPD-350 cruise missiles. This is evidently not true and a flimsy excuse that other decision-makers also use.
What is certainly true is that Ukraine has made immense progress in the field of stand-off weapons. This applies both to long-range OWA UAVs such as the An-196 Liutyi and the FP-1, and to cruise missiles such as the BARS or FP-5.
In this regard, the German government should also be given credit for having provided hundreds of millions of euros in funding for production and, consequently, indirectly for the further development of certain products.
The importance of supplying Western cruise missiles such as the Taurus KEPD-350 has continued to diminish over recent months and years. We must acknowledge this, and it is indeed a very good thing, but that does not mean that Ukraine is not still reliant on them.
As far as I am aware, between March and May 2026 alone – a period of just three months – Ukraine deployed Storm Shadow and SCALP-EG cruise missiles, supplied by the UK and France, four or five times against high-value Russian targets in the illegally occupied territories and on Russian territory.
7th of March 2026
US-supplied ATACMS and French-supplied SCALP-EG were used to heavily damage and destroy a site near the Donetsk Airport which was used by Russia for the storage, preparation, and launch of Shaheds and similar UAVs.
10th of March 2026
British-supplied Storm Shadow were used to strike and severely damage the Kremniy El microelectronics factory in Bryansk. The factory specializes in discrete semiconductor devices and integrated microchips, which are critical parts of various Russian weapon systems like Iskander missiles.
13th & 14th of April 2026
French-supplied SCALP-EG and US-supplied GBU-39 were used to strike and damage OWA UAV storage facilities near the Donetsk Airport.
25th of May 2026
Today, British-supplied Storm Shadows were used to destroy an important enemy command-and-control and communications post in the temporarily occupied territory of Luhansk region.
These were hugely significant strikes against the Russian military and the Russian arms industry. Strikes that have most likely saved countless Ukrainian lives and prevented damage amounting to hundreds of millions of euros. Furthermore, it is probably impossible to quantify just how many rounds, missiles etc. worth hundreds of millions of euros and months of production capacity have been saved because the destroyed UAVs and missiles do not have to be shot down by Ukraine's air defences.
For each of these strikes, the Ukrainian military for reasons preferred the use of Western-supplied weapon systems, rather than domestically produced ones. And for each of these strikes, the Ukrainian military would therefore have preferred the Taurus KEPD-350 over Ukrainian cruise missiles, had they been made available to them.
This is also about ensuring availability. By supplying, say, 100 cruise missiles from Bundeswehr stocks – a quantity which, according to their own statements, they would be prepared to hand over – the Ukrainian military would, based on the data mentioned above, be provided with modern and highly effective weapon systems that would last for at least a few months.
A few months, during which the next batch of Storm Shadow or SCALP-EG cruise missiles can arrive in Ukraine. A few months, during which the domestic FP-5 can be further improved.
I also see the political message behind it. Year after year, the German government has been stepping it up a notch – first under Scholz, and now under Merz. That is truly commendable, and I acknowledge that.
But at this very moment, when Ukraine is inflicting truly serious damage on Russia and Putin and is beginning, for the first time in a very long while, to build up noticeable momentum, what a powerful statement would it send if Germany were now to cross one of its very few red lines and supply Ukraine with cruise missiles – something it had refused to do for years?
To sum up: A delivery to Ukraine makes perfect sense, both militarily and politically, and must go ahead. The fact that both Merz and Pistorius are standing there saying that Ukraine no longer needs this really does make me a bit angry, to be honest.
I know we’ve gone over this topic again and again, and it really is dragging on. But this topic of Ukraine and Taurus affects me particularly on a personal level, which is why I’d like to clarify this once more. Especially as many journalists repeat such statements as facts in their publications, without questioning or fact-checking them. That’s why I wanted to put this into context, at the very least because it was really important to me.
