As happy as I am to see the Wayans family rightfully back at the helm of the franchise, it saddens me to report that #scarymovie is quite awful. The Wayans are so preoccupied trying to poke fun at every horror film, pop culture moment and hot button topic of the past decade that they thoughtlessly throw every dart they have at the board, barely able to make anything stick, leaving so much wasted potential on the table. I chuckled occasionally at some inspired gags and this lovable cast is still a ton of fun to watch, but there isn’t much else here. However, I’m fully aware this franchise is critic proof and that fans will eat it up, which is great, but this one just wasn’t for me plain and simple. Full review in the AM!
MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE is a candy-coated, cosmic blast that is dripping with earnest nostalgia! This is a fantasy film that makes the wise choice to embrace the camp, not run away and hide from it. Knight fully understands the assignment, delivering plenty of visual panache and bravura action, anchored by a rock-solid, charming leading turn from Galitzine as He-Man. The scale is suitably massive, Pemberton’s score RIPS, but Knight wields the film’s heart with the power of Grayskull. Not gonna lie, Leto steals this one as Skeletor, clearly having the time of his life as he balances the beloved villain’s goofiness with his fearsome nature. Not all of the humor lands and it takes a bit to properly find its footing, but once it does this remake is a vibrant crowd-pleaser that makes me hope we get to visit Eternia once again. I cannot stress enough how much everyone is sleeping on TUNER! See this movie while it’s still in theaters because it’s one of the best films of the year, just sayin.
Exclusive clip from ‘TUNER’, starring Leo Woodall, Dustin Hoffman and Havana Rose Liu.
The film follows a gifted young piano tuner whose heightened sense of hearing draws the attention of criminals.
Now playing in theaters.
SPIDER NOIR weaves a wonderfully immersive web, delivering one of the best entries into the superhero space in quite some time. Whether you’re watching in classic black and white or true hue color, this show POPS. From the stellar production design to the costumes and dizzyingly stylish cinematography, this show looks sumptuous, not only capturing that noir look and feel, but shaping its own singular aesthetic. The storytelling and performances are perfectly pulpy, especially Cage who is clearly relishing every second of screen time, balancing Ben’s zaniness and emotional magnetism. I LOVED this one. More of this please!
As someone who’s not the biggest gamer, every once in a while a game gets its hooks in me and this time it’s 007: FIRST LIGHT! This is such a fun, addictive game that not only captures that classic Bond aura and aesthetic, but carves its own path surprisingly well. I know a lot of names are being tossed around for the new live-action Bond, but Patrick Gibson would crush it. He captures the character perfectly and has the look, charm and swagger that could make him a great choice…just saying 👀
#Backrooms is a spine-tingling debut for Kane Parsons. His restraint and patience as a filmmaker at such a young age is impressive, using wide, open framing and near ceaseless tension to make the audience feel paranoid and wholly uneasy throughout. Ejiofor delivers haunting, top tier work that, coupled with the retro aesthetic and the truly incredible production design, makes for a wonderfully refreshing horror film that swallowed me whole. Safe to say, I’ll never look at furniture the same way again. Full review tomorrow!
