China is already leading in top management education — my personal journey at Fudan University.

This is another example of where China has moved up the world ladder.
Look at the latest FT global EMBA ranking. A Fudan-linked program is world number one. Six of the top ten are Chinese or jointly run with Chinese universities. Elite executive education has already moved.
I did the Chinese Fudan EMBA fifteen years ago. It was a privilege. I just realised it is now ranked world number one by the FT. Quite shocking. I want to share that classroom, because the ranking only confirms what I saw then.
I went in thinking I was reasonably prepared. Back home I had what would be considered a high math level. In that room it became one of the most humbling experiences of my life. I had been a big fish in a small pond. Suddenly I was a big fish in a big pond full of big fish. The saying is 小巫见大巫 (xiǎo wū jiàn dà wū) — a small magician meeting a great one. I was the small magician, surrounded by bigger magicians, smarter people. That feeling returned more than once. A large share of classmates were STEM graduates — engineers and operators who had already built factories or scaled technology. Quantitative fluency on another plane. Builders first, not salesmen.
In China, the more one learns, the more humble one becomes. Arrogance about knowledge only shows how little one sees of what remains to learn.
Many classmates were Party members, some already at senior levels in Beijing. Their overall competence — IQ, technical depth, command of files — was far higher than that of most Western politicians. A scary thought from Europe.
That class already showed where the country was heading. Since then China has changed in almost every dimension: infrastructure, industry, science, cities, logistics, digital systems, military modernization, technical talent. The workshop became a systems power.
China will go much further. The conditions are there: human capacity, infrastructure, planification, and a system that can still set long-term priorities and deliver them. This is not 拍马屁 (pāi mǎ pì) — flattery.
I am Swiss-Italian. I care first about my own countries. That is why it should alarm us — or inspire our societies to deliver tangible results.
I happened to do the top one.
Sit in that room and the ranking is less surprising. Late recognition of what was already visible fifteen years ago.
The knowledge gap stayed with me.
My Chinese classmates knew their own history, their constraints, and the West in detail — markets, politics, media, corporate language.
The reverse was rare. They studied us.
We recycled slogans about them.
The cultural difference was in full display.
Chinese classmates showed wisdom in silence and listening. They waited, then spoke once and hit the point. Westerners — myself included — filled the air, thinking out loud. One talked five minutes to circle an idea.
The other listened twenty and settled it in a sentence. Volume is not intelligence. The sharpest people were often the quietest.
Chinese wisdom arrives in few words. A short remark, then the point stands.
I went looking for a credential. I found a country that already knew itself better than we knew it — and was quietly building the capacity to lead.

You don’t make a surprise, desperate trip to a country you’re imposing sanctions on unless it’s to ask for something.
It only takes two brain cells to see that this kind of visit is to ask for something, not to make threats.

And curiously, after the CIA director’s visit, Russia has announced that President Pezeshkian and Putin are set to meet next week in Kyrgyzstan, on the sidelines of the SCO summit.
There are no coincidences in this field. Just as there is no chance that the Iranian president will carry a message from the Russians capable of changing anything.
The truth is that the Russians did very little for Iran in the war. Incredibly, Iran fought almost entirely with a national industry and rare allies, which today makes it hard to apply pressure for an end to the state of war.
