The Salisbury Plain does it yet again! This site is 2km from our normal site. We ringed 224 birds of 27 species including the 2nd Wryneck in a week, 1st Spotted Flycatcher of the year, 13 Grasshopper Warblers, 4 Redstarts, Wheatear, Stonechat, 3 House Martins and 112 Blackcaps.

Tree Sparrow first broods in Wiltshire finished today. 340 young fledged from 109 pairs. This is about 30% of the population of southern England. Every one is critical so we feed through the summer to try to increase the survival rate.

The main purpose and highlight of my trip to Finland has been ringing 5 Great Grey Owls. It has been unbelievably brilliant to get so involved with the whole project and learn so much about these amazing birds. We have retrapped 3, 1 at 13 years old and 2 at 8 years old. Superb!

We are busy searching for nesting Great Bustards. The team has been out daily with our drone and conducted several follow-up searches on foot.

There may be fewer pairs of Tree Sparrow in southern England than Curlew. Not enough people are concerned these lovely birds are going extinct. We are trying our best to keep them in Wiltshire. We ringed 34 Tree Sparrow nestlings tonight and we have passed 100 pairs in our boxes.

Last year I started colour ringing the Yellow Wagtails that breed on the Pewsey Downs. They are back in but so far I have not seen a colour ringed bird. Tonight I saw this female showing incredibly well and I managed to read the metal ring. We ringed her 2km away in July 2021.
