The man charged with steering the ICT Renaissance at the Uganda Revenue Authority - Robert Mutebi (@rmutebi) Commissioner IT and Innovation has shared highlights of the #URADigitalStrategy at the launch here in Nakawa.

Here are a few highlights;-

~ The story is really simple. At URA, we have changed the game. By and large we ‘ve been playing checkers. This game is highly reactionary and requires limited strategy. Today, and going forward we are playing Chess. Chess requires thinking, deep strategy, proactiveness and futuristic.~

~ In the spirit of thinking about the moves ahead, we have had to adopt the mind of a chess grandmaster. From a technology angle we have taken on two major assignments (to simplify our customer journey and to reach as many people as possible with tax services)~

~ We have seen a revamp in the touch points with URA. Today, you can reach URA via WhatsApp for a service. One day, I met a guy roaming around in the URA tower in search for something. Upon asking him, he told me he was looking for a person who was responsible for his service ticket. Because of technology (the ura touchpoint) the search is no longer about what, where, when but who when it comes to service delivery.~

~This strategy seeks to solve the issues that we have been seeing with the URA service and approach to business. Within the strategy are solutions that have been devised and the route map of deploying these solutions in service.~

~ We are using technology to improve inclusivity. We have for instance introduced the USSD code *285# that is onboarding many taxpayers who in the past couldn’t self serve with our online platforms. Taxi drivers today are using their feature phones (mapeesa) to pay their advance income tax and traffic tickets.~

~ We are making our systems interoperable in a way that is professional and Centred on the client.~

~ Our system up time is 99.9% and that is why we have built the data center. ~

~ We seek to provide clarity and certainty for taxpayers whenever they need information from URA.~

~ We seek to use technology more to identify and address tax noncompliance in real time. You have seen some of our ICT solutions to curb evasion like Non Intrusive Inspection.~

"I am tasking URA to secure a 20% Tax to GDP ratio within another two years. There is no way a mature country such as Uganda should have to go through the humiliation of borrowing.

As @mofpedU, we additionally urge you-the URA to facilitate government's job creation efforts for our youth."
