I don't get many gifts but one thing I do hear and appreciate is the small comments such as "sir, I have learnt so much from you this year". For me that is a gift.

@TaranDannyn @RogersHistory It does happen but I will not tolerate it in my classroom. Respect needs to flow both ways. Be firm, fair and consistent.

Don't accept lowering the bar. Keep your expectation and standards of behaviour high.
