There are two prevailing explanations for the by-now undeniable leftward lurch of and rising extremism in the Democratic Party.

1. It's a reaction to Trump and Trumpism on the right.
2. It reflects underlying structural and sociological changes in the American political system.

The truth is that both explanations are correct, but (2) is more significant and, because of Trump's unique ability to generate outrage (often justifiably) and grab attention, underappreciated. Gerrymandering + geographic sorting, exist of Blue Dog Democrats, entry of younger voters (especially female and college educated), changes in the media (polarization, fragmentation, switch to subscription-based model), and other factors predate Trump/ism and will almost certainly outlast it.
