Enshrining this wartime designation of Japan 🇯🇵 (and also Germany and Italy) as an "enemy state" in the founding document of the UN was a mistake of specificity, freezing and ossifying a particular moment into language that no longer reflects reality.

Today these nations are prosperous, responsible, rule-bound democracies.

In 1995, the UNGA voted by 155-0 (with abstentions) to obsolete the clause but the formal language is still there and China continues to use it against Japan in international settings.

Russia and China have their beefs with Japan and sit on the security council so it is hard to see the clause being removed from the charter in a formal way. The wording is therefore likely to stay in place and be weaponized against Japan.

The structural problems of the UN are contained in its design and frankly, it is a completely useless organization at this point
