It is VITAL that we protect the languages students join our classrooms knowing, hearing, understanding, speaking. These are leverages to acquiring English or other languages.

Ignoring languages not only limits students’ participation but also endangers their confidence & identity increasing language loss.

Linguistic oppression has devastating consequences.

@mrraffel A2: We need to do as Don Parker suggests and find, "...a common interest and use that as a springboard for conversation." (page 72) It takes time and energy to invest in our students, but when we do we show that we honestly care about them as individuals and not just students.
