In 2024, 73% of D.C. voters said independents should be able to vote in primary elections. Last week, they still couldn’t.
That’s because the D.C. Council voted against funding the initiative. They could take that vote again today.
Experts agree: the inclusion of D.C.’s nearly 90,000 nonpartisan voters likely wouldn’t have changed the result given JLG’s resounding win.
But it’s the principle, some say.

Democracy works best when more people can participate.
Semi-open primaries give independent voters a voice while respecting political parties. More participation. More representation. Stronger democracy.

Tomorrow, @councilofdc votes on whether to fund semi-open primaries and finally let independent voters participate.
Please contact your ward and at-large councilmembers today. Ask the full Council to fund Initiative 83 and let independents vote. 🧵

🧵Food For Thought 🧵
A proposed change to HUD Section 214 isn’t getting nearly enough attention.
If finalized, it could force tens of thousands of mixed-status families out of federally assisted housing.
And cities like here in D.C. could feel the impact quickly.
In my latest opinion piece in the Washington Informer, I reflect on what’s truly at stake this election cycle and why protecting Home Rule and DC’s autonomy requires vigilance from both our leaders and our voters.

Great candidate forum tonight in the Mt. Pleasant community moderated by @tomsherwood. From federal intervention to housing and public safety, a lot of ground was covered.
Favorite question of the night to candidates: Who would you rank #2?
