@AstroExploring Plate solving? I used to do 2 or 3 star alignment which was always a pain, error prone and time-consuming but now I just slew somewhere close to my target, plate solve and then I can hone in exactly on my target.
if I sample a normal distribution n=1000, calculate mean and median, then repeat that 1000 times. The variance of the medians is always greater than the variance of the means. Can anybody explain why?#Statistics@AndrewM_Webb@NoahDatesRocks@RyanIckert
@NoahDatesRocks@RyanIckert@AndrewM_Webb Yeah, my intial investigation injected odd, occasional spikes like we see on a mass spec(not part of the normal distrubution), &each time the median 'won', but then i turned off the spikes leaving just a normal distribution & the wheels came off my understanding, so i reached out
Thanks for all the responses! I have many blindspots in my knowledge of statistics and this just reaffirms that i shouldn't fill those blindspots with intuition. It just didnt feel right, and Google was no help!😉
@RyanIckert@AndrewM_Webb@NoahDatesRocks But if that's the case, then as you increase the sample number n, then wouldn't you expect the median to become a 'better' estimator and get closer to the mean's variance? In the few models i ran, that doesnt seem to happen but levels off at some fixed difference
