60 years ago, the Selma marchers put their lives on the line for our right to vote. We honor them by continuing the fight.

2️⃣ Urging Congress to pass the #JohnLewisVRAA
Black people make up 1/3 of Louisiana’s total population yet are disproportionately underrepresented in the state legislature.
Today, our plaintiffs in Nairne v. Landry are headed back to the 5th Circuit to defend the District Court's 2024 ruling and fight for fair maps.
Oral argument concluded today at the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in Nairne v. Landry, a case that will determine the future of Louisiana’s state legislative maps.
LDF and co-counsel urged the court to allow the map enacted in 2024 to stand.

Also coming up on the redistricting front just after the holidays:
On January 7, the Fifth Circuit hears oral argument in the case challenging Louisiana’s legislative maps under the Voting Rights Act.
For the first time in decades, Louisiana will send 2 Black congress members to Capitol Hill after decisive outcomes in elections in both CD2 and CD6.
Both districts were created in response to LDF’s decades of organizing and litigation on behalf of Black voters.
"So it's up to the American people, and it's up to our courts, our judiciary, to step into this breach and determine how far we are going to allow this country to devolve. And at the Legal Defense Fund, we are prepared to defend it to the end." @JNelsonLDF on @thereidout
Thank you for the shoutout @SymoneDSanders. We are extremely proud that LDF and our incredible clients and co-counsel were able to create a congressional district in which Black voters were able to elect a candidate of their choice in this election. Power is built brick by brick.
It's Election Day!
Remember to fill out your entire ballot if you're voting today so your voice is heard on every issue and in every race.

"Federal law requires LA to have a fair map that reflects the power and voice of the [its] Black communities. The state recognized as much when it adopted a new map with a second majority-Black district in January. Now SCOTUS must do the same." @scnaifeh

BREAKING: SCOTUS will now consider whether Louisiana violated the U.S. Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause when the state legislature redrew LA’s congressional map in January 2024, after a federal court found the state’s 2022 map violated the VRA.

"To be able to see tens of thousands of voters go out and vote during those extra days – and to see the ‘Geaux Vote’ banners, spelled in the Louisiana way – it was just incredible." @ToriWenger

"What we have is a map with two majority Black districts, a map that we believe complies with the VRA, and finally honors the spirit of representation for Black Louisianans and truly for all voters in the state that believe in those principles of fair representation."@ToriWenger
