The more I use generative AI, the less I see it as a substitute for live-action.
It’s a different medium.
If we had shot this “for real,” it would be… a whole other film.
AI isn’t about making things cheaper.
It’s about making things you wouldn't shoot.
@flagge7@TheCinesthetic You need to watch the whole thing. It’s not about finding the right track it’s about focusing the viewer on Spielberg’s staging and blocking. The music puts you in a mindset while he also removed any other audio. It’s actually quite addictive and fascinating.
This style of light doesn't really appear in animation anymore. You know it when you see it -- it's bright, hot and almost dangerous.
Our new issue explores the tricks behind it, and how one artist has revived the look for the digital age:

Right after I left wma in ‘08 I made a deal to work out of a management company called untitled. They had an executive called Laura Rister whose job it was to help their clients with projects. I asked her what her favorite unmade script was and she said Zach Quinto had a great one called margin call. I read it and loved it. I asked to speak to the writer/ director JC Chandor. He’d been trying to get this made as his first film. 8 years of trying taking random editing jobs. Nothing. I loved his producer Neal Dodson for doggedly hanging in there too. I called JC and told him I’d make it happen and we’d be shooting within 6-8 weeks. I later found out he took the call on a park bench because he’d promised his wife he was going to stop chasing this dream and get a job. We were shooting 8 weeks later.
We sent the movie to Sundance but it took some cajoling on my part to get them even to play it albeit in the second half. We had to show it privately in park city the first weekend to get the buyers to see it. Because there was no real audience other than buyers only IFC and Roadside were interested. We went with Roadside because they said they might go day and date as opposed to IFC who said they definitely would.
In August roadside told us they were going day and date which up until that point was the way indies were dumping films they didn’t think would do business. In September two things occurred . The reviews were fantastic and occupy Wall Street happened. Journalists were saying see this film if you want to understand what’s going on. The movie was a big hit for a day and date film.
The cool part of the Sundance screenings was that JC met Redford in Park City and asked him if he could send him a script. Redford said he was the first film maker at the festival to ever ask him. The script was All is Lost. It was very short because there was no dialogue and mostly storyboards. Bob said yes and was nominated for an Academy Award later for his performance. That’s the beauty of this festival. Anything can happen.

Ridley Scott's hand-drawn ALIEN storyboard presentation for 20th Century Fox. These helped him secure the director job and almost doubled the film's budget thanks to their clarity, vision and scope. They are also known as 'Ridleygrams".
Steven Soderbergh’s smart, fun spy thriller Black Bag is the kind of mid-budget, star-led adult entertainment that has become an endangered species in cinemas. Here the director explains why the box office is so hard to predict these days, why he has always been fascinated by duplicity and how he built his career filming “two people in a room”

here's how it works:

@JourdainMartin 1. Sa population n’a rien demandé
2. Ce sont les guerres iniques de l’occident au moyen orient qui créent le terrorisme
3. Comme d’habitude l’occident n’a strictement rien à faire du « régime change », c’est juste du racket organisé
