I’ve submitted my feedback for the Disability Act 2005 review. The system is broken. We need modern, rights-based laws, a statutory "no wrong door" duty, and lifelong rights to assessment.

Any chance @AntonSavageShow you would ask the Taioseach why he has allowed people with disabilities and carers to fall further into poverty even though we campaigned for a whole year for an emergency €400 payment to help with the cost of living crisis.

He gave to the hauliers and farmers and money for others but not to us!

St Stephens nursing home, Glenmore, Cork.

A damaging Hiqa inspection of the HSE-run St Stephen’s nursing home unit in Glanmire, Cork, has exposed severe governance failures and systemic neglect regarding vulnerable residents. 😡

Triggered by the prolonged, unannounced absence of the manager, the watchdog revealed that no new staff had been hired for five years, leaving some shifts operated entirely by unfamiliar agency workers.

This critical lack of continuity left residents with cognitive impairments unprotected from peer abuse and treated under a cold "medical model".

Inspections also uncovered degrading living conditions, including locked toilet doors, restricted garden access, and twice-weekly frozen meals defrosted from aluminium containers in front of residents.

While inspectors noted that on-the-ground staff remained kind and compassionate, political figures and families are rightfully demanding immediate accountability and lasting HSE reforms to restore dignity to the facility.

@Louisehassan4 @gardainfo Exactly. The Gardaí hands are tied. They are trying to protect the carer, child and act as social worker/ hse. No family should be abandoned and left in crisis. Take a child to A&E and Tusla will threaten court action!

The Disability Act hasn't been updated in over 20 years. Now there's a public consultation. It's important that as many disabled people, families and representative organisations as possible take part.

@GarNob Irony at its finest. The government is currently reviewing how the Disability Act has "not worked", while the state simultaneously denies civil legal aid to a deaf-blind man trying to fight HSE discrimination. The system is entirely unfit for purpose.
