Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) held a Drones Stakeholders Awareness workshop in coordination with other members of the Drones Tri-partite Committee in Entebbe on Thursday, 23rd January. The Tri-partite committee is comprised of representatives of UCAA, Commander Airforce, Special Forces Command and Customs in conjunction with the office of Chief of Defence Forces.
The objective of the workshop was to create awareness and bridge gaps between UCAA and the Resident District Commissioners, Police and Ministries that engage with drone applicants in their respective areas. In his welcome remarks, Eng. Ronnie Barongo, the Director Safety, Security and Economic Regulation commented the Stakeholders who play key roles in approval and monitoring of drones usage in Uganda. Barongo observed that UCAA was concerned about the illegal possession and use of the unmanned aircraft systems (drones) by some members of the public which contravenes the Civil Aviation (unmanned aircraft systems) regulations, 2022. He further said that UCAA has embarked on sensitization on drone importation clearance and certification procedures to legally operationalize drone activities in the country.
Mr. Fred Bamwesigye, the Director General of UCAA who presided over the opening of the workshop emphasized that the increasing demand to apply technology has come with challenges hence the need to review and establish effective means of control and enforcement.
Mr. @FredBamwesigye, @UCAA_DG: Uganda signed a capacity development & implementation agreement with @icao in May 2024 where ICAO is to provide Uganda with access to ICAO’s expert roster, project management & customized training packages.
A major initiative will be the development of a new National Air Navigation Plan for Uganda.
