HLF-funded project, Tower Block UK @EdinburghUni. Creating an accessible record of UK multi-storey social housing through our database & public engagement.
As of 31/10/2019, the ‘Tower Blocks - Our Blocks!’ Heritage-Lottery funded project is officially brought to a close. We’d like to use this final post in order to say a thank you to all organisations, libraries, and community groups with whom we’ve worked over the past 5 years...
A key legacy of the project is the ‘Tower Block UK’ Database, which comprises over 4000 images of high-rise buildings from the UK,past and present. This important archive is fully accessible to the public, and will remain so after the official project end.

Cables Wynd House (or the Banana Block), Leith, 1965: Grade A listed by Historic Environment Scotland in Jan 2017. (With thanks to @Tower_Blocks for the visit last week.)
Many thanks to @Tower_Blocks for a great event today celebrating their project. I spoke on a panel with @asterios_a3lab and Prof. Ola Uduku about the future of high rise, and there was an amazing variety of perspectives on mass social housing across the afternoon.
This is an important history. We need to tell a more complex story of high-rise and recount varied life experiences with much that was (and is) positive. 2/2
Thanks to everyone at @Tower_Blocks for organising a fascinating day. Lots of great contributions from all concerned, not least the experts in the audience. 1/2
