One of the most under-appreciated sculptures in history is the "The Vision of Constantine" by Bernini.

Bernini pioneered Baroque sculpture, injecting movement into stone like nobody ever had. His equestrian masterpiece is one of his most fluid - every inch of it is in motion.

It depicts Constantine the Great witnessing a miraculous cross in the sky; a vision which inspired him to victory in battle and to later free Christians from Roman persecution. He was famously the first Roman ruler to convert to the Christian faith.

It's usually overshadowed by Bernini's other great works, and it sits in a less accessible part of the Vatican than various other masterworks, like Michelangelo's Pietà. That said, its positioning is striking. The cross that stunned Constantine is hoisted upon an adjacent wall, opposite the emperor, and the figures are bathed in sunlight.

The flowing drapery at the back was a late addition. The sculpture's destination was changed last minute, so Bernini added the device to fill the expansive niche inside the Scala Regia where it was placed. The work was finished in 1670, 8 years after Bernini started.

The sculpture was met with some criticism at the time. Contemporaries poked at the length of the horse, its immense tail, the lack of reins and saddle - but they all missed the point. Bernini's goal wasn't realism, it was maximum movement.
