@FrappuccinoSlim@AlexNowrasteh I don't think that'd be enough. The Dinesh D'souza route is ideal imo. He became Christian, married an American, gave his child an American name, celebrates our culture, etc. that's true assimilation.. not just liking sports, but maintaining your separate cultural traditions
@AlexNowrasteh The goalpost never moved.. you just aren't understanding.
Your neighbors are likely still Hindu, still prefer Cricket, still celebrate Holi, etc. Them participating in our culture didn't change that..
But you as well, have a good weekend.
@AlexNowrasteh I'm not sure I understand your point. Just because they participate in our culture/celebrations, doesn't mean they give up theirs..
And as their numbers increase, their celebrations, and culture, will overpower ours.. it's not "envy" to oppose this, and hence, oppose immigration
@Jason I'd say America was "improved" by the world's hungriest and most talented immigrants
The country was officially "built" in 1776, fueled by more than a 100 years of uninterrupted slave labor
then immigrants chose to come here, and they improved it into the superpower it is today
@RealDianeYap Not quite... the US was "founded" as a colonial outpost of the Kingdom of Great Britain and then the former subjects of the crown got tired of paying
The founding is a story of rebellion more than anything else imo you know.. the whole "No taxation without representation" thing
@RealDianeYap I tend to side more with this post tbh everyone deserves respect as humans, and as citizens, but joining the winning team late, and then claiming equal ownership over a country your bloodline just arrived to seems wild to me

Americans have tiers:
Tier 1: Pre-Colombian (1492) Americans
Tier 2: Pre-Revolutionary War (1783) Americans
Tier 3: Pre-Civil War (1865) Americans
Tier 4: Pre-WW1 (1918) Americans
Tier 5: Pre-WW2 (1945) Americans
Tier 6: Pre-Pandemic* (2024) Americans
My family and my ancestors are 100% Tier 6.
While all these Americans should probably, legally, be seen as the same, I think earlier tiers should get more respect.
Becoming an American citizen after 1945 is like joining a sports team that just won 3 championships;
Totally different, from crossing the Bering Strait, showing up on the Mayflower, or coming on a slave ship.
@AlexNowrasteh The most technically correct answer is that pre-USA was built as a colonial outpost of the Kingdom of Great Britain with slave labor.
The previous subjects of Britain then revolted to form the USA from the pre-built foundation, and immigrants have been improving it ever since.
@FloridaManV I don't think the argument has ever been that foreigners haven't contributed greatly to the US over the years.
It's more about job displacement and the arrogance of some that think we need them.. we don't
Bioinformatics isn’t hard because of code
(with ChatGPT, you can write code much faster).
It’s hard because of decisions.
Thousands of tiny choices that shape your results. Here's a thread.
Chick-fil-A's real estate team accepts less than 1% of franchise applicants and is equally selective about locations. Costco requires average household income above $100,000 in the trade area before they will even consider opening. Trader Joe's site selection process takes years for a single store.
These companies spend millions on demographic research before committing to a location. As someone who builds homes, I treat their work as free underwriting.
Here are the 9 retailers and restaurants whose presence tells me an area can support a new residential development:
1. Chick-fil-A. Strong household income, high traffic, family oriented demographics.
2. Costco: minimum population density floor and $100k plus household income required in their trade area. That is the same demographic profile that supports single family new construction.
3. Trader Joe's: targets are educated, higher income households in areas with strong community identity. Seeing an opening is one of the strongest signals a neighborhood has arrived.
4. H-E-B (or your regional grocery anchor): In Texas, when H-E-B commits to a new location, they have already studied projected rooftop counts for the next decade. Outside Texas, the equivalent is Publix, Wegmans, or whatever dominant grocer controls market share.
5. Starbucks: uses a proprietary analytics tool called Atlas to map traffic patterns, demographics, and proximity to other retailers. A cluster of two or three locations within a few miles tells you daytime population and commuter traffic is significant.
6. Target: site selection leans on household income from $50,000 to $120,000, which is the sweet spot for attainable housing buyers.
7. Home Depot or Lowe's: an existing base of homebuyers investing in their properties signals pride of ownership in the community, which supports new construction and resale values.
8. Dutch Bros: expanding aggressively with remarkably good site selecting targeting high growth suburban corridors with younger demographics and strong car traffic.
9. Whataburger / In-N-Out / Wawa: these cult quick service restaurants do not expand recklessly. In-N-Out will not open more than a day's drive from a distribution center. When they show up in a new market, they've done an incredible amount of homework.
When I drive a new market for first time, the retail and restaurant mix tells me more about the area than anything I could figure out sitting behind my computer.
@mactellomckeown For example, Barack Obama was touted as the first African-American president, but his lineage is different than the native black population, Obama being of Kenyan black origin
@mactellomckeown The real reason ppl are upset is that there's a general rising consciousness going on the US rn where the native black population that's been there for centuries are rejecting the term African American because it is too ambiguous; the ambiguity allows too many people to claim it
@TaylorLorenz@BasedMajinBoo This song is a Foundational Black American anthem where Kendrick attacked Drake as not authentic because he was born and raised in Canada away from Blacks.
It's wild seeing this song get chosen as a Greek dance song 😂 but it somewhat fits if you want to say you're different ig
@TheSalesBull1 It's a nice facility, but it's not like they live there. They live in dorms with the other students.
And I feel like you can get access to most of this after you graduate with a membership to a reasonably priced high end gym/spa nearby.
@honeyNonABG Lincoln said he would've kept slavery going if he could. The Civil War was fundamentally about preventing the south from seceding and forming a separate nation.
There was a real possibility that the United States would've fractured into many smaller countries like Europe.
Dairy cows are extremely inbred.
More than 99% of the Holstein bulls used for breeding in the U.S. trace their paternal line back to two bulls born in the 1960s.
A tiny number of companies collect semen from bulls, genotype them, run statistical analyses, and then sell the "best-performing" semen to farmers around the world.
Because everyone buys from the same companies, a handful of bulls sire a huge share of calves. The Holstein breed's effective population size is (genetically) under 60. But this genetic selection process has increased milk yields per cow over the last few decades.
