Did you know the Timberwolves got caught up in some contract drama back in 2000? 😳

This involved former 1995 first overall pick Joe Smith. Smith signed a series of below-market, one-year contracts with Minnesota starting in 1999. This arrangement allowed the Wolves to secure his "Bird rights" so they could eventually exceed the salary cap to sign him to a massive multi-million-dollar deal down the road.

The Timberwolves were fined $3.5 million as an organization, had to forfeit five first round draft picks (2001-2005), owner Glen Taylor was also suspended over a year.
