Player Spotlight: Tyler Thompson (@gTylerThompson )

At 6’5”, 245 lbs, the Cary, North Carolina native brings prototypical size, length, and athleticism to the edge. A former four-star in the 2023 class, Thompson has always had the physical tools. What’s elevated his game is how he’s matched that with discipline, football IQ, and high-level fundamentals.

Out of high school, Thompson committed to North Carolina , choosing the Tar Heels over programs like Michigan, Duke, and Kentucky. Early in his career, it was about development, building his frame, sharpening his technique, and learning how to consistently win at the next level.

That work showed up in a big way during his redshirt sophomore season.

More importantly, it showed a player beginning to put it all together. Timing, hand usage, leverage, and the ability to finish plays in the backfield. Following that breakout, Thompson entered the 2026 transfer portal and quickly became one of the more sought-after edge prospects available. Programs across the Power 4 came calling.

In the end, it came down to SMU and Louisville Cardinals football. He chose the Cards. Thompson brings elite pass rushing ability with the speed to consistently pressure quarterbacks and the size to hold up against the run. He plays with an understanding of angles and timing that allows him to disrupt plays before they fully develop. Pair him with Clev Lubin, and you’re looking at an edge group that can impact games early and often. Add in the speed behind them at linebacker and in the secondary, and this defense starts to play fast in all phases.

He’s a playmaker with NFL upside, stepping into a system that knows how to maximize it. Expect constant pressure and disruption as he will play a vital role in the 2026 Cardinals Defense.
