How a simple ECG saved a young athlete’s life - Scott's story is a powerful reminder of why CRY's cardiac screening programme is important.

At just 15, talented endurance runner Scott Owen was diagnosed with a potentially fatal heart condition – #WPW during a routine CRY screening session. He had no symptoms, no family history, and was fit and thriving. But that screening may have saved his life.

Every week in the UK, 12 young people die from undiagnosed heart conditions. CRY’s free cardiac screenings, funded by bereaved families and communities, are helping to change that.

In this vital national article, which has been shared across six key ITV regions, CRY supporter @Hils_Nicholls, CRY CEO @Drstevenjcox, and Professor @MichaelPapadak2 discuss with ITV News the critical need for ECGs to be read by specialists in order to prevent the misinterpretation of results.

Hilary, whose daughter Clarissa tragically died last year due to an undiagnosed heart condition, had previously had an ECG after collapsing during a sports event. Tragically, Clarissa was given the all-clear because her results were not read by a specialist.

Dr. Steve Cox states, “If your child has gone to A&E and is having an ECG, you want to know that the person reading it is a specialist, knows exactly what they’re looking for.”
