Matthew lay in that hospital bed barely moving when Max came up beside him and rested his head near his chest. His parents stood in the background holding onto each other while the monitors kept running beside the bed. After so much time in that room, everything had probably started to feel the same. The lights, the wires, the waiting, all of it. Max didn't rush in or make a scene. The golden retriever moved in slowly, got close to the bed, and stayed there like he already knew this wasn't a normal visit. That was the part people felt right away. The room was full of machines and people trying to help, yet the dog brought something none of that could. He brought in something Matthew knew from before the hospital ever became his world. Matthew still looked worn out. He still looked weak. Nothing about the moment felt loud or dramatic. Then his hand started to move. It wasn't much, and nobody needed it to be. In a room where every small change had started to matter, that tiny movement was enough to stop everyone where they stood. His parents saw it. The people near the bed saw it too. No one stepped in to break the moment. Max stayed close the whole time. He didn't jump around or pull away. He just kept his head near the boy, calm and steady, like being there was all he cared about. Looking at them, it didn't feel like some big miracle scene. The moment felt smaller and more human than that. A sick little boy had his dog beside him, and for a little while the room seemed less cold. Matthew wasn't alone in that bed anymore. Max had found his place next to him, and he stayed there. Sometimes that kind of quiet comfort says more than anything else in the room
As the #USNSComfort hospital ships off to New York today, we are reminded of the selfless acts of courage our @USNavy medical personnel & crew are doing to ensure all Americans stay healthy & safe as we fight the spread of #COVID19.
Due to your ongoing generosity, as well as in partnership with other Indianapolis churches, yesterday we were able to order 200,000 n95 type masks approved by Indiana state health officials. These will be distributed to the hospitals of greatest need right here in our city!
Jermaine Bell was saving his birthday money for a trip to Disney World.
Instead, he used it to help feed those in need as they evacuated #HurricaneDorian's path. https://t.co/8CrCDvJM8e
