I'm deeply alarmed by the renewed escalation in the Middle East.

All attacks must stop immediately.

The ceasefires in Lebanon, Iran & Gaza must be fully respected.

Any steps that could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts must be avoided.

I'm also deeply concerned by Israel's decision to close crossings into Gaza & reiterate my call for the immediate reopening of all crossings to ensure the rapid, safe & unhindered passage of humanitarian assistance at scale throughout Gaza.

The exercise of navigational rights & freedoms, in accordance with international law, must be respected.

Everything changed after October 7.

Israel no longer has the luxury of living by caution and containment. That may be where the divide is beginning to show between Netanyahu and Trump.

Trump is 6,000 miles away. The Iranian regime and its jihadi proxies are not sitting on America’s borders. They are sitting on ours.

Israel can no longer tolerate armed Islamist militias just minutes from Israeli communities. Not in Gaza. Not in Lebanon. Not in Syria. Not anywhere along our borders.

We respect the United States. We respect President Trump. And on most issues, Israel and America are aligned.

But allies do not always have identical interests.

Trump is trying to use American power and leverage to keep Israel in line. That is his job. He is America First.

But Netanyahu is not the prime minister of America. He is the prime minister of Israel.

Israel is heading toward an election season. The Israeli public is not looking for another round of caution, containment, quiet understandings, and temporary ceasefires. Israelis want this war brought to a conclusion, and they want it concluded with victory.

There is little chance Netanyahu survives politically if he is seen as capitulating to Washington at the expense of Israel’s security.

Trump is America First.

Netanyahu must be Israel First.

That tension may be uncomfortable at times, but it is also honest. Both leaders love their countries. Both are acting in what they believe is their national interest.

And that deserves to be understood, even when it creates friction between friends.
