The problem I always see with this argument is that they don't account for maturity. Someone, like the MC here, can hit a mental block that prevents them from maturing being a certain point. That is what I believe happened to him, and why he still behaves like a child a lot of the time earlier in the story.
A huge portion of the story is not just about him growing up in a new world, but mainly him maturing and growing as a person. Coming to terms with his past, recognizing his shortcomings and failures, and accepting and moving past them. Being an adult is not just being old. It is a state of mind as well.
I believe, based on what we see and know from him, that he stagnated mentally as an early teen(I'm a bit fuzzy on this point). So, still a kid. He only started to move past that point at around the time he was in his teens again while in the new world. So mental and physical maturity eventually do align again, just 20-30+ years too late.
Does this lessen some of the earlier stuff he does in the series. No, not really. It does help explain the mentality behind it though and why he exhibited such behavior. Children are often not rational, and horny teenagers even less so.
I want to come back, but for an extended visit. Last time I visited I was there for a week, but had to rush to see all the things I wanted.
I want to be able to relax and take everything in the next time I'm there. Also interested in trying to live there for a while, but I hear that is hard to achieve as a foreigner.
@terrakei07 Speaking as a Californian, it is because:
1. It is too damn expensive to live here.
2. They keep making it more expensive and difficult to live here.
3. People here are either largely wack or on crack.
I love this misconception that people pirating something means they will never pay for it. I wouldn't have a problem paying for shows/series if:
A. They were actually released here
B. They weren't butchered by localizers, leading to the pirated fan translations, more often than not, being the better product.
I usually find other ways to support the creators, like buying the original source material (light novel/manga) that it came from. That way I can at least try and help ensure the series I like can continue being made.
Piracy is almost always a supply chain/convenience issue, and sometimes a quality one as well. If I could, easily, get these things here, and actual care was taken when translating them for my language, I would be more than happy to purchase them or a platform hosting them. The sad reality is that this isn't the case though, which is how we ended up where we are now.
@justnyxs What Remains of Edith Finch has you playing as female lead you never even get to see. Game has me crying at the end, and to this day is still one of my favorite story games. Though I guess I can't like it because I can't goon to it... So sad...
