A 36-year-old white Scottish man was charged yesterday after stabbing five people in an anti-Muslim hate attack.

An imam’s house in Bolton was targeted in an arson attack.

There have also been multiple attacks on mosques, including an arson attack intended to endanger life, a projectile attack, multiple incidents involving graffitis, and hate signs.

Not a single COBRA meeting. No dedicated officers to protect the community. Just a few tweets.

A terrorist planned to walk into a mosque and open fire.

You didn't read that in any headline. Neither did we.

Alfie Coleman, 22, was jailed for 13 and a half years at the Old Bailey yesterday. He tried to buy an AK47, a Skorpion automatic weapon and ammunition. In September 2023, he identified a local mosque as his target.

Stop on that.

A mosque. Rows of men shoulder to shoulder. Grandfathers. Fathers with sons beside them. Foreheads on the ground. The one moment in the week when they cannot see what's behind them.

That was his plan.

Police found a hate list at his home. A neo-Nazi flag. He idolised the man who murdered Jo Cox.

And the headlines called it a "mass gun attack."

The mosque — the target, the point, the people — buried in the body text.

You know when a mosque does make the headline?

Last week. Birmingham. A 16-year-old boy was shot on Bowyer Road. West Midlands Police said it plainly: "we do not believe the shooting to be connected to this place of worship."

The headline: "Boy, 16, fighting for life after shooting near Birmingham mosque."

Nothing to do with the mosque. Headline.

Read those two lines again. That's the whole system.

The night before Coleman was sentenced, a Muslim man in his 50s walked to Noor ul Islam Mosque in Leyton. A man old enough to be your father, going to pray.

A stranger beat him and screamed racist abuse at him. He went to hospital instead of prayers.

The morning after, a new report told the country 42% of Britons believe Muslims cannot integrate.

The same report found 85% of British Muslims favour integration.

We keep reaching for this country. Two in five have decided we can't hold its hand.

The report's author is Sara Khan, launching a new extremism think tank. In 2018, over 100 Muslim organisations signed an open letter objecting to her appointment as counter-extremism commissioner. Baroness Warsi called her "a creation of and mouthpiece for the Home Office."

Her own report logged 1,784 far-right events in 12 months. And 225 Islamist events.

Eight to one against us. And the question on the front page is still whether we can integrate.

Three days. A man beaten walking to prayer. A terror plot with our name on the target, and our name cut from the headline. A country polled on whether we belong.

We are not asking to be centred.

We are asking to be counted.
