In the opening pages of Riddles in Hinduism, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar doesn’t begin with a conclusion.

He begins with a question.

If Hinduism is Sanatan-eternal and unchanging-then…

Where is Indra?
Where is Varuna?
Where is Mitra?

For centuries, these were among the principal gods of the Vedas. Yet their worship declined, and other traditions gradually came to occupy the centre of Hindu religious life.

Why?

To Ambedkar, this was evidence that religious practices had changed over time.

He argues that “the worship of Indra, Varuna and Brahma ceased to be profitable.”

Over time, the focus of Hindu worship shifted. Devotional traditions centred on deities such as Shiva, Vishnu, Rama, Krishna and Devi became increasingly prominent, while the Vedic gods gradually lost their central place in popular worship.

One way to understand Ambedkar’s argument is this: the old Vedic religious system was no longer at the centre of religious and social life. As the focus of worship shifted, those who shaped religious practice shifted with it. In Ambedkar’s view, this was no coincidence. It reflected a change in material interests. When material interests changed, religious practices changed with them.

To support his argument, he points to the Bawa Malang shrine near Kalyan, where he says a Brahmin priest officiated in Muslim attire while receiving the offerings of devotees.

Only then does he write the famous line:

“Religion or no religion what the Brahmin wants is Dakshina. Indeed the Brahmins have made religion a matter of trade and commerce.”

The purpose of Riddles in Hinduism was not merely to provoke debate. As Ambedkar explains in the Introduction, it was written to challenge the belief that Hinduism had remained unchanged, to draw the attention of the Hindu masses to what he called the “devices of the Brahmins,” and to encourage people to think for themselves rather than inherit beliefs without questioning them.

More than seventy years later, the invitation remains the same: read, question, and think for yourself.
