This is what qualifying for the Round of 16 feels like. @Socceroos lets do it again tonight! #AUSPER Final 2 minutes Australia vs Croatia, Stuttgart 2006 #FIFAWorldCup#GoSocceroos
Iran are eliminated because of
- a goal v. Belgium ruled out due to a player's butt being offside
- a last minute goal v. Egypt ruled out due to a player's toenail being offside
- a goal from Austria in the 96th minute from a player subbed on on the 95th
Poor Iran… my god. I just realised how utterly brutal this World Cup has been for them.
Think about it:
They thought they’d scored a last-minute winner against Egypt to send themselves through… only for it to be ruled out.
Then, today, they thought they’d made it anyway as one of the best third-placed teams when Algeria scored with second left, only for Austria to level it with virtually the last kick of the game.
I can’t even begin to comprehend the heartbreak. TWICE.
NO TERMINES NUNCA!!!!
Looks like 🏴 out but could still find out at midnight ET tomorrow (5am BST Sunday) they’re playing 🇩🇪 in Boston at 4.30pm ET (9.30pm BST) on Monday.
From every logistics POV (travel, hotels, ticketing, team prep), that’s a highly questionable situation for a major tournament.
I am receiving messages saying that certain schools won’t show the game because the teachers aren’t into soccer!

Disgraceful it’s Australia! It’s not about which code you support!
The H2H rule is absolutely CRAP. Kills so much excitement from the final group stage matchday.
Turkey beating USA means nothing now. If not for H2H, there’d be serious jeopardy in this Australia vs Paraguay game.
The move from goal difference to head-to-head at the World Cup: fixing something that wasn't broken and breaking things in the process.
It's less fair, less fun and creates less jeordy. Well done boys, good process.

And imagine the tension now in this Brazil-Scotland game if Haiti weren't locked out by head-to-head
I honestly find it infuriating. A terrible development.
@StatisticUrban@christoaivalis I think there's a chance FIFA change hosting rules to "host confederations" rather than host countries, given you now need to house 48 teams, or more (eg Sth America 2038, Oceania 2042, Africa 2046, Nth America 2050, Europe 2054, Asia 2058) similar to Euro 2024
