On 12 August, Caspian Sea Day, we mark the 20th anniversary of the entry into force of the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea - a shared commitment by Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan to protect the Caspian Sea and its unique environment.
Today, that commitment is more urgent than ever. The accelerating decline of the Caspian Sea is no longer only an environmental concern. Falling water levels are already affecting fragile ecosystems and biodiversity, coastal communities, ports, shipping and regional connectivity, as well as economic activity across the Caspian basin.
For Azerbaijan, the Caspian is an integral part of our history, identity and development. Protecting it requires stronger scientific cooperation, coordinated regional action and sustained international attention to addressing both the causes and consequences of its decline.
The Caspian is a shared sea and a shared responsibility. Its future will depend on our ability to act together.
