Georgian Dream PM Irakli Kobakhidze appeared to threaten legal action against Giorgi Kandelaki over a Hudson Institute report on Iranian influence in Georgia and a recent editorial by The Washington Post.
“A new small wave of attacks has been launched against the Georgian people, our country, and our government. [Foreign] Agents are directly involved in this, including this particular individual, who is a formula of treason — Mr. Kandelaki,” Kobakhidze said.
“We know about his past activities, we know what he is doing today. I do not know, perhaps a legal response would not be inappropriate in relation to this fact either, although this is not my responsibility — it is the responsibility of the relevant state institutions,” he added.
Kobakhidze was responding to a question from pro-government media concerning the Hudson Institute report co-authored by Kandelaki on Iranian influence in Georgia and a Washington Post editorial that referenced the issue.
The government-aligned outlet suggested the Washington Post editorial had effectively been sponsored or paid for by Kandelaki’s “so-called research,” accusing the newspaper of publishing an “anti-Georgian article” that portrayed Georgia as a “training center for terrorists,” and asked whether the state should respond with legal measures to such “provocative articles.”
We congratulate Estonia and its people on Independence Day, honoring a nation that exemplifies resilience, commitment to democratic values, and a deep cherishing of freedom.

Georgian Dream regime has brought new charges against political leaders in the so-called sabotage case. Charges were brought against Mikheil Saakashvili, Giorgi Vashadze, Nika Gvaramia, Nika Melia, Zurab Japaridze, Elene Khoshtaria, Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze.
🔴In a so-called "sabotage case," Ivanishvili’s attorney general announced that criminal proceedings had been initiated against several opposition leaders - including Mikheil Saakashvili, Giorgi Vashadze, Nika Gvaramia, Nika Melia, Zurab Japaridze, Elene Khoshtaria, and Mamuka Japaridze - on allegations of "sabotage, aiding and abetting a foreign country in hostile activities, financing actions directed against the constitutional order and the foundations of Georgia’s national security, and calling for or attempting the violent overthrow of the constitutional order"

Keta Tsitskishvili, awarded in December for her civic courage and devotion to the truth,is now behind bars for “blocking the road.” Her courage represents the spirit of a free Georgia. Today, three journalists are imprisoned. Jailing courage will not stop freedom.
Georgia woke up to a new wave of arrests this morning, as police detained multiple demonstrators and raided activists’ homes following yesterday’s rally, during which protesters managed to block Rustaveli Avenue on day 325 of the ongoing anti–Georgian Dream demonstrations. The crackdown comes just hours after newly enacted amendments severely restricting freedom of assembly took effect.
Under the new law, anyone “blocking” a road or covering their face during a protest faces up to 15 days in detention — and up to one year in prison for a repeated “offense.”
Among those arrested are Formula TV journalist Vakho Sanaia, activist Levan Jobava, artist Levan Margniani, and activist Nino Svanidze. Veteran protester Lasha Chkhartishvili was detained outside Marjanishvili metro station while on his way to the cemetery with his minor daughter to mark forty days since his mother’s passing. Activist Lara Nachkebia was reportedly charged and detained for wearing a scarf on the sidewalk after the protest had already ended.
The wave of detentions is ongoing, with new arrests reported by the minute. Georgia now has more political prisoners per capita than Russia, underscoring the scale of repression. Observers see the crackdown as yet another escalation in Georgian Dream’s sweeping assault on democratic freedoms under what many observers call a Russia-backed regime of oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili.
Today marks 300 days of non-stop protest by the courageous and patriotic Georgian people. They will not accept the anti-American Georgian Dream regime’s sale of their country to China, Russia & Iran. This regime is illegitimate. We must pass MEGOBARI!
Chaos erupted outside Georgian Dream’s election HQ in Tbilisi on Monday evening, after supporters of the ruling party attacked anti-government protesters gathered outside.

⚠️ OUTRAGEOUS: FOUR liberal opposition leaders have been thrown in jail by the Georgian Dream regime. This is pure political repression.
The people of Georgia are demanding democracy, and they are being silenced. Liberals will not stay quiet. We demand their immediate release 🇬🇪🇪🇺
Giorgi Vashadze, leader of the opposition party Strategy Aghmashenebeli, has been sentenced to to seven months in prison and barred him from holding public office for two years, marking the fourth opposition figure jailed in just two days amid an intensifying political crackdown.
Judge Nino Galustashvili found Vashadze guilty of refusing to comply with a summons from a controversial ‘parliamentary investigative commission’—widely seen by critics as a tool for targeting dissent. Despite a request from his lawyer to postpone the session so the accused could deliver a final statement, the judge proceeded to announce the verdict in his absence. Vashadze had opted to remain at his party headquarters with colleagues while awaiting the decision.
This latest conviction follows yesterday’s sentencing of three other prominent opposition leaders—Mamuka Khazaradze, Badri Japaridze, and Zurab Japaridze—on similar charges linked to their refusal to recognize the legitimacy of Parliament’s “Tsulukiani Commission,” which has become a symbol of the Georgian Dream regime’s pressure campaign against the pro-Western opposition.
Rondeli Security Conference 2025 kick started this morning, welcoming scholars, experts and practitioners from around the world to discuss urgent matters in international politics and global security.

The most recent decision by Georgian Dream to imprison Nika Gvaramia, a political opponent and leader of the "Coalition for Change" party, is a remarkable demonstration of what this political entity actually represents. (1/2)
Nika Melia is the third person and the second active opposition leader, after Zurab Japaridze, to be jailed over boycotting the GD parliament's commission investigating alleged UNM crimes. His party colleague, Nika Gvaramia, is expected to share his fate. https://t.co/Oy92pFQ8m6
One of the leaders of the Coalition for Change, Nika Melia, has been arrested, his lawyer has said.
Melia was reportedly detained nwhile on his way to participate in a television program. The circumstances of the arrest remain unclear.
Melia’s arrest is feared to signal another major crackdown on dissent in Georgia with over 50 political prisoners, including political leaders behind the bars.
