The biggest story of the last 48 hours at the 2026 World Cup hasn’t been football. It has been
• Omar Abdulkadir Artan, named CAF's Best African Referee of 2025, was denied a visa. Despite travelling to the U.S. with a diplomatic passport, he was refused entry and sent back. FIFA announced that he will miss the World Cup entirely.
• Swiss footballer Embolo's visa was put under review and he was only able to join his team days later.
• Members of the Senegal national team staff were forced to remove their shoes and subjected to lengthy searches sparking accusations of racism.
• The South African national team arrived in the US much later than planned because of visa processing and part of the delegation not being granted visas.
• Iraqi national team player Aymen Hussein was held for questioning for nearly 7 hours upon entering the United States.
• The Iranian national team spent days dealing with visa procedures at the U.S. Consulate in Türkiye. The U.S. only allowed them entry on match days. Fifteen members of the delegation were denied visas. Iran has been forced to base itself in Tijuana, Mexico, rather than the United States and commute for matches.
• The Uzbekistan national team was searched with bomb-sniffing dogs and the footage went viral in international media.
• Some Scottish supporters, despite being eligible to enter the U.S. visa-free under the ESTA programme, had their travel authorisations revoked just days before departure.
• Many supporters who had already bought tickets and booked accommodation had their visa applications rejected.

President @WilliamsRuto launched the Kenya
Benelux Chamber of Commerce, opening new opportunities for trade and investment between Kenya and the Benelux region comprising 3 European economies namely Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
The Kenya Benelux Chamber of Commerce will provide Kenyan businesses access to commercial networks serving more than 30 million consumers across the Benelux region.
The Kenya Defence Forces Institutional Housing Programme is steadily redefining the application of Public Private Partnerships in the delivery of specialised public sector infrastructure, demonstrating how innovative financing and effective project execution can directly enhance the welfare of our servicemen and women.
Yesterday, the PPP Committee inspected the Roysambu site, where 500 housing units were completed and commissioned by H.E. the President earlier this year. The units are now occupied, providing modern, dignified, and secure accommodation to Kenya Defence Forces personnel and their families. The successful occupation of the units marks an important transition from project delivery to realised social and institutional impact.
The Roysambu development forms part of the wider KDF Institutional Housing Programme, which will deliver 3,069 housing units across Roysambu, Nanyuki, Lanet, Gilgil, and Mariakani. With overall programme progress standing at 84%, implementation continues to advance towards the full delivery of additional housing capacity across @kdfinfo installations.
The inspection provided an opportunity to assess construction quality, occupancy outcomes, and the broader contribution of the programme to military welfare and institutional readiness. The Roysambu site offers clear evidence of how strategic infrastructure investments can strengthen living conditions while supporting the operational effectiveness of our defence forces.
The programme continues to demonstrate the value of the PPP framework in mobilising private sector capital and expertise to address complex public sector requirements. It stands as a practical example of how structured partnerships can accelerate infrastructure delivery, generate long term value for public institutions, and contribute to national development priorities.
