This is a good example of much of the misrepresentation that is made of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Our young men are ordained to an entry office in the priesthood. (think of it like an alter boy) the year that they turned 12. They do not collect tithing, so this is a falsehood. On fast Sunday (when the membership fast and donates the money they would’ve spent on food plus usually more because we’re generous), the members give a fast offering that is used to help the poor. One thing the church is known for is helping the poor or needy. These deacons do go around 2 x 2 and collect fast offerings, but this has largely been replaced with electronic offerings. In our congregation of 100 households, only three still have the deacons come by to pick up fast offerings. All the others just donate electronically. However, those deacons do go around and deliver flyers or notices and help to build bonds of fellowship in the congregation. It is just like the ignorant or prejudiced detractors of the church to try to paint that which is good and which helps people in as negative a light as possible.
