If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing
— Malcolm X
It's been 3 years since Joyce Echaquan died in a QC Hospital.
Joyce's Principle has not been adopted at the federal or provincial level, and the Quebec government still refuses to acknowledge systemic racism.
Things to think about as we paint everything orange this week.
In the 11 years I've been with my partner, we stop holding hands when we cross the street in #hamont
Why? Because we feel unsafe being queer in front of a potential weapon- a car.
In 2021, our fears became a reality for a Muslim family in London.
"We will not meet this moment if we only promote and amplify voices that look exactly like the white supremacist structures that were pushing back against."

🌈 Had a dynamic talk with Omar Dabaghi-Pacheco at @CBCNews about @EnchanteNetwork's urgent 2SLGBTQI+ hate summit, intersectional housing policy, and Canada's human rights.
This work builds on a legacy of power and progress.

Instead of policing students’ names, how about @SKGov work on updating our education curriculum for the digital age? Create the leaders of the tomorrow instead of repackaging the bigotry of today.
That would be leadership.
In a massive 9-1 ruling, Brazil's Supreme Court has ruled that homophobic hate speech is now punishable by prison.
Now on the same legal level as racist hate speech, perpetrators of the crime will face two to five years in prison.
Justice Edson Fachin, the lead judge on the case, said in his ruling it was a "constitutional imperative" to give LGBTQ+ citizens equal protection under the law.
Congratulations on this legal win, Brazil! 🇧🇷
@SKGov is stoking the flames of deep social discrimination. But as Queer and Trans communities, we know a thing or two about dealing with bullies! Government has no place telling students who they are allowed to be.
We are saddened and angered at the recent news from the Saskatchewan government. We are in contact with affected members, and will continue to work with them to fight this unfounded and dangerous directive.
Full statement to follow.
Masking homophobia and transphobia as “parental rights”. As if many of us aren’t kicked out of our homes for being queer or trans.
School is often our only safe place - and @PremierScottMoe and @SKGov are bringing more BULLYING into the classroom.
Shameful abuse of power.
Parents must be included in all important decisions involving their children.
Education Minister Dustin Duncan today announced that all Saskatchewan schools will have a consistent policy on parental inclusion and consent. 🧵
We should all be amplifying @SaskTeachersFed right now as they fight back against @SKGov homophobic and transphobic attack on students across the province.
The new parental inclusion and consent policies are dangerous and a threat to the safety and well-being of students.
The Federation is calling on the government to reverse this policy decision and engage in meaningful consultation with its sector partners and expert teachers.
@SKGov School is hard enough when you’re different. Government is no place for bullies. What a shameful abuse of power - human rights are not optional!
What a disgusting abuse of power from @SKGov. @PremierScottMoe and his government are BULLYING queer and trans students - as if school isn’t hard enough when you’re different! Shameful.
Today, Education Minister Dustin Duncan announced new consent policies for Saskatchewan schools. Parent consent for students under 16 will now be required to change a student’s name or pronouns in the school.

Seeing all the videos of #OshaeSibley dancing & seeing protesters vouging in support, made me think of all the little Black, Queer boys out there & what it means to find joy in the simplest things like dancing. We won’t let bigots dim their light. Queer lives matter. RIP Oshae
