@EddieComeaux Mental health has only recently started to come to the attention of the general public. In respect to student-athletes, this needs to be discussed more because the severity of mental health is not often taken seriously or encountered, unless its too late.

@ElizabethGarme5@helloJuJudy Elizabeth, this is a very important statistic to be shared with student-athletes because they need to realistically prepare for a career outside of athletics. This should be done in college, a time for self-exploration and discovery.
@helloJuJudy#UCR50
Student-athletes need to be given career supplements and exposure in order to prepare for life after college. The reality is that majority of student-athletes will not continue athletics professionally.

The term and use of "amateur" is the basis of the NCAA's justification to not let student-athletes benefit from their own image or likeness. However, the definition of amateur has changed so much over the years, this outdated rule needs to change too.
#UCR50@helloJuJudy
@SamanthaVela17@helloJuJudy Student-athletes typically try to give everything that they can into their sports involvement. If they are injured, the NCAA and their university no longer have any need for them. As an "amateur" status league, there should be more care for players.
#UCR50@helloJuJudy
@KhrystalieL @helloJuJudy You are right! Some of the greatest athletes of today are strong females, what can we do to create a larger social and institutional emphasis on women's athletics today?
#UCR50@helloJuJudy
Since the passing of Title IX, the amount of female coaches has decreased because Title IX "legitimized" women's sports and attracted the attention of male coaches. There should be a larger emphasis on gender equality in coaching. #UCR50@helloJuJudy

@zahnle_zoe@helloJuJudy Zoe, I really liked your perspective. Instead of bashing intercollegiate athletics for their mistakes, you are questioning how to reverse it and use it beneficially. Coaches & players should use their platform to encourage young people. Change starts small.
#UCR50@helloJuJudy
With reference to systematic racism, what can be done in order to prevent "schooling" and to ensure that everyone receives quality "education"?
#UCR50@helloJuJudy
@Coletucker4____@helloJuJudy You are right! The campus administration, staff, and faculty should be aware of their professional position and status and do everything in their power to assist student-athletes with academics first, but also as athletes.
@helloJuJudy#UCR50
Campus climate is largely created and maintained by University administration and potentially faculty. To what extent can an individual student affect campus climate?
#UCR50@helloJuJudy
@briannamacias00@helloJuJudy There are tolls on student-athletes' mental health and their personal life and social life and relationship with the campus community and academics and so much more. Role engulfment has so many consequences that should be addressed. @helloJuJudy#UCR50
Role engulfment, or when athletes become overwhelmingly dedicated to their sport, has negative consequences on academics, personal life, social life, and athletes' relationship with the university community. #UCR50@helloJuJudy
@ponation_@helloJuJudy Jose I think that you make an excellent point, I hadn't considered that coaches were more than just coaches. However, a counterpoint considers what about teachers that also act as advisors and father figures to their students? Don't they deserve more pay too?
#UCR50@helloJuJudy
Is the ever-growing commercialization of intercollegiate athletics related to the educational missions of universities? Why is athletics so prioritized, when it is only an aspect of the "college experience"?
#UCR50@helloJuJudy
@ponation_@helloJuJudy Yes, I agree with you! The term student-athlete definitely focuses more on the term, "athlete", than athlete. The priorities of the coaches and athletics programs should be more aligned with the academic institution's values. @helloJuJudy#UCR50
Major clustering student-athletes into "easier" majors is a truly disappointing phenomena in higher education. It is an issue that ruins the integrity of the academic programs, the athletics programs, and the student-athletes' education. #UCR50@helloJuJudy
@EddieComeaux College athletes should be compensated for the university's use of their names, images, and likeness. The NCAA and supporting institutions have suppressed the rights of student-athletes for far too long because of the creation of "amateurism", an outdated rule. #AthleteInclusion
