🚨 Sherry Skillen, 62, of Beauvais Drive, in Riddlesden, Keighley was sentenced at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court last Friday for animal cruelty offences in relation to her 14yr poodle cross, Merlin.
She pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering.
Louise Freeman, prosecuting, described it as a “grave case of prolonged neglect causing severe and avoidable suffering”.
The court heard rescue volunteers from Aireworth Dogs in Need visited Skillen’s home on June 29 last year after unsuccessful attempts to make contact.
Skillen answered the door and refused access, according to Ms Freeman.
Merlin was at the bottom of the stairs and had not moved for a couple of days – when he was provided water, he lifted his head and drank for several minutes.
Ms Freeman warned the court that the evidence was “upsetting” and said Merlin was taken to the vets where he collapsed.
The court heard the elderly dog’s hair was matted, he was dehydrated and blind in both eyes.
Ms Freeman spoke in court about evidence from Dr Samantha Johnson, who said Merlin had to be carried to the clinic because he “couldn’t stand or walk”.
She added Merlin’s entire coat was matted, covered in dirt and faeces, and was “infested with an unknown amount of fleas”.
The prosecutor said, in addition, Merlin’s eyes had peeled away from the sockets, he had a lesion to the neck and anaemia.
It took four hours to remove Merlin’s matted hair, who had to be sedated during the process, and staff had to wear full PPE because “fleas were jumping on them”, the court heard.
Ms Freeman told the court Dr Johnson said it “was one of the worst cases of matting – full infestation and dermatitis – she had seen in her career”.
Merlin showed minimum response while at the clinic and took one step and collapsed.
He was euthanised on “welfare grounds” the following day.
The court heard Merlin would have required further treatment and a prolonged hospital stay, so a decision was made to put him down as the “fairest outcome” – Merlin continued to suffer until he was euthanised.
Dr Johnson determined that Merlin suffered physically and mentally for months, “likely longer”.
He had not been seen by a vet for more than a decade, since 2015.
Ms Freeman said Merlin’s suffering was “entirely preventable” if he had been given “timely vet care”.
The court heard that Skillen admitted Merlin had collapsed and had suffered.
Ms Freeman said Skillen claimed she “couldn’t afford vet treatment but accepted she could have prioritised Merlin”.
He was not groomed appropriately or watered, the court heard.
Ms Freeman said the offence was aggravated by the neglect being “prolonged” and the suffering “extreme and all encompassing”.
She added that Skillen “should have prioritised Merlin and vet treatment should have been sought”.
Skillen, who was in floods of tears in court, said she works in engineering but has been off sick since February and agreed her life is “up and down”.
She added: “I’ll just regret it for the rest of my life.”
Chair of the Magistrates, Peter Haigh, said: “Sometimes the worst thing you can do with a problem is bury it.”
He added: “It’s all well and good saying it in hindsight.”
Skillen was handed a 40-week jail sentence, suspended for a year.
She was also disqualified from having any animal for life.
This means she cannot own, transport, keep and participate in the keeping of any animals, or be party to any arrangement under which she is entitled to control or influence the way in which animals are kept.
Skillen said she sometimes dog-sits and Mr Haigh replied, “no dog-sitting, no feeding them”.
Mr Haigh added: “It’s a grim message I’ve got to give you because this is a sorry state of affairs.
“You don’t come across as someone who would do something as chaotic as this.
“What you put that dog through during that period of time, this dog that looked to you as its master, you seriously let this dog down".

🚨 BEWARE OF 'UNLEASH THE HOUNDS DOG WALKING' BASED IN THE NORTH EAST - APPEARS THEY MAY ABUSE YOUR DOG
A customer writes:
Debbie was observed forcefully kicking a puppy twice.
'On June 2, 2026 at 1115 our home surveillance system recorded Debbie, a representative / owner of 'Unleash the Hounds,' entering our property to collect our puppy for his dog walk.
The footage clearly shows our puppy exhibiting excitement by jumping upon her entry. Debbie was then observed forcefully kicking our puppy twice. These actions caused our puppy to collide with a furniture unit, which visibly shook from the impact. Me and my partner had prior discussions with Debbie during our initial meet-and-greet regarding our puppy's tendency to jump when greeting him after he's been home alone due to him having bad separation anxiety.
we discussed our ongoing efforts to train this behavior, she acknowledged this information and stated her experience with similar situations.
At the end of April this year we were looking for a dog walker for our cockapoo puppy which is where Debbie messaged recommending her services. We had an initial meet and greet with Debbie which went well and she started walking our puppy once a week from the beginning of May. This was his 5th dog walk with her. Normally Debbie and another lady enters the house to collect him and we have had no issues prior to this day. On the day of the incident Debbie entered the house alone for the first time.
We have had no problems with this business up until this incident and we enjoyed getting to see our puppy have fun on clips of their walks on her Facebook page each week.
This incident was captured by a clearly visible home CCTV camera that was in sight and that Debbie looked straight into after hurting our dog.
Debbie knows we are aware of this situation and that we have seen this footage and we didn’t receive a message back, in fact she just blocked me on her business page which we have interpreted as a lack of remorse and lack of accountability and to me shows major guilt.
If this is what she’s doing in front of a visible camera what is she doing to our dogs off camera and when there is no one around.
We are so saddened by this situation that we not only trusted her with our dog but our home too, and how this incident has happened in our dog's own home a place where our dog should feel content, safe and loved.
We have reported this incident and the CCTV footage, to the relevant authorities who are dealing with this situation, Debbie has denied this incident happened.
However The point of this post is to make people aware to stay away from ‘Unleash the Hounds’ dog walking services so that other people’s dogs don’t have to encounter the disturbing abusive behaviour shown on the footage by Debbie'

THIS CREATURE THREW HER ELDERLY DOG IN A LAKE & DROWNED HER
🚨 CONVICTED | Michelle Moran, 63, from #bebington, #wirral, Merseyside - drowned her elderly dog in a lake.
On September 29, 2025, Moran threw her 16-year-old Jack Russell, Gypsy, into a boating lake off Gautby Road in #birkenhead and callously walked away, leaving her to drown. The dog's body was recovered from the lake by a member of the public a day later and an appeal was posted to Facebook.
In a statement presented to the court, RSPCA Inspector Anthony Joynes, who investigated for the animal charity, said: "[Moran] said she'd seen on social media the following day that Gypsy had been found dead in the lake and she knew she 'shouldn't have done it'."
Moran said she was sorry for her actions, telling the inspector: "All I remember is throwing her in and walking away."
She claimed Gypsy was suffering from tumours and deteriorating eyesight, although neither condition had been confirmed by a veterinary professional.
Inspector Joynes visited the scene and found that the lake was surrounded by a concrete wall which would have made it extremely difficult for a small dog, particularly one that was elderly, weak or unwell, to climb out of the water.
A veterinary examination revealed Gypsy weighed just 3.7kg. She was also found to have blood around her mouth and nose.
The court heard Moran had cited financial difficulties as the reason she did not pursue euthanasia through a veterinary practice.
Following the sentencing, Inspector Joynes described the incident as "an extremely callous act".
"She had a responsibility to seek veterinary care if she believed Gypsy was seriously unwell," he said. "To take her to a lake and throw her in beggars belief. Poor Gypsy would have suffered a horrendous death."
Sentencing | 17 weeks' imprisonment, suspended for 18 months; curfew; 25 days of 'rehabilitation'. Lifetime ban.

🚨 CONVICTED Amy Ashbrook, 36, from SHOTTON, DEESIDE - starved and neglected a French bulldog, a kitten, and five hens.
In a statement, provided to the court, RSPCA Inspector Mark Roberts described his visit to Ashbrook's address. He wrote: “On arrivalI noticed the garden itself was full of junk and rubbish including an overflowing skip. There was also a very small chicken coop on the ground containing five adult chickens.
“These birds were in very cramped conditions with very little room to move around or spread their wings. There was no food or water available and the base of the coop was covered in a thick layer of faeces.”
He said: “On entering the kitchen I saw a tan coloured French bulldog in a cage to the left of the door. The cage didn’t have a base in it, just bare wire and the dog was lying on a tea towel.
"This dog was in very poor body condition with one out of nine body condition score (with 4 to 5 being healthy) and had open pressure sores on his back end and another open wound on his spine just forward of his hips.
“Also of concern was the fact that this dog did not react when we entered the kitchen, he just lay there curled up.”
Inspector Roberts said: “My immediate concern was for Reggie. He was still not showing any interest in what was going on around him.”
Ashbrook agreed that Reggie and a “lethargic kitten” called Baguette could be taken to a vet.
Veterinary examination offound the kitten was anemic due to a large flea infestation.
Reggie he was found to be emaciated and had untreated open pressure sores, an open wound on his spine and discharge from both eyes.
The chickens were also examined and were said to be “very underweight and infested with mites but bright and alert”.
All animals were signed over to the RSPCA and have since been happily rehomed.
Following sentencing Inspector Roberts said: “Every animal deserves to be treated with kindness and respect and if you have a pet you are responsible for making sure they are happy and healthy.”
Sentencing | 12-month community order with 20 days of 'rehab'[ ordered to pay a £200 fine and a £ 114 victim surcharge.Banned from keeping all animals for TWO years.

🚨 ALLEGED DOG ABUSER - ST ANNES ON SEA BLACKPOOL. IF YOU KNOW HIM, HAVE A WORD
From another social media post:
Does anyone recognise this specimen of humanity who was on the beach - south of the pier - about 7.45 this evening (Wednesday 27 May)?
My friend and I (with our dogs) noticed him as he was hitting both of his dogs. He then picked one up either by its collar or scruff of the neck and let it hang! We could hear what he was saying to them (loudly) and it wasn’t pleasant.
Out came my camera and I pretended to be videoing the beach but was taking this photo. He sort of walked towards us and as he did so the language he used towards the dogs changed from very unpleasant to more favourable.
As he came closer I said I’d noticed the change in what he was saying to the dogs - well the beast was unleashed and a tirade of foul abusive and threatening language came forth - he was nearly screaming at us.
Other people heard him as we were asked what all that was about. My only concern was for the dogs - 2 Yorkshire terriers (or similar) who seemed to be fastened together by a length of chain - could have been a ‘brace’ for walking 2 dogs on one lead.
Being reported to police this morning.
