I care not whether the Iranian regime is old or new, good or bad.

I care only that we attacked it, without the faintest hope of success by our own metrics using the means available to us, damaging not only our interests but also the interests of every ally we have everywhere in the world.

But even that couldn’t compensate for the fact that so many people had watched their loved ones (or themselves) die much too early from smoking-related illnesses.

@rkylesmith If the technology cannot make redundant a vast quantity of human labor, then it cannot be monetized and the whole thing is just a very expensive science fair project.

I don’t know how different messaging was possible, or would have been believed.

@GrayConnolly It is surely noteworthy that Huey’s machine featured little to none of the race-baiting that usually passed for political debate in Louisiana at that time. He was well on his way to becoming a national figure at the time of his murder.

The 1920’s and 30’s were the age of the strongman, as well as the Golden Age of political propaganda.

What all the strongmen had in common was misrule and ineptitude by the ruling classes they displaced. The poverty-ridden American South had seldom seen a propaganda machine like Huey Long’s, and they required little persuasion.

If you are looking for the moral of the Huey Long story, fear not. I will give it to you now:

Past a certain point, no one is going to accept a lecture on the finer points of civics, or economics, or Constitutional Law as an excuse for why things aren’t getting done.

Adjust your political paradigm accordingly.
