@jellifl0r @dreaelizabethh However, we thoroughly disagree with the suggestion that all leaders MUST be women, as that is discriminatory and invalidating towards survivors and allies who are male/nonbinary/queer. Discrimination based on gender is illegal under SOLE guidelines.
@jellifl0r @dreaelizabethh If you would like UCCRJ to proceed in your vision of what the org should be, you are more than welcome to run democratically for leadership positions in the upcoming election! The election will be held on 5/16, on Zoom!
However, we believe actions speak louder than just words. If you have specific suggestions for further adoptable measures we can implement as a SOLE-certified organization, please do not hesitate to DM us!
As an organization we apologize for any harmful actions any current or previous member of our organization has taken. We have come a long way from how we began, and look forward to continually making progress so we can be a more just, equitable, and safe space for everyone.
In particular, we would like to publicly apologize to @jellifl0r for any & all harm done by our organization. The parties involved are no longer part of our organization, nor were the remaining directors aware of the events until this week, but we offer our support and apologies.
@rheashetty23 @jellifl0r We cannot force resigned directors to do anything, but we as an organization are taking accountability through action, led by women of color, survivors, and allies.
@rheashetty23 @jellifl0r The organization will not be ended because of time-sensitive legislation, research, and other projects our committees have been working hard on all year. However, the leadership structure which has been inequitable and harmful in the past will be completely revamped.
@dreaelizabethh The new structure will also make it more accessible for transfers to attain leadership positions and ensure greater transparency of leadership meetings.
@hannahrtsy these are not the same people. the restructure is being led by a coalition of the remaining directors (who were NOT involved in the events of the past few weeks) former directors who left the org because of its lack of prioritization of BIPOC voices, and members who want change
We are aware of several social media posts made by a former member about our org. In the spirit of transparency, we would like to clarify that we are currently undergoing a monthlong restructuring process that will hopefully end on 5/16 with the election of new leadership.
TL/DR: We are making sweeping constitutional changes to a SOLE-certified org. To make sure the process is equitable and all inputs are considered, it cannot be rushed. Please have patience and compassion for all those involved, as we remind you this is a student-run organization.
All current and past UCCRJ members are invited this Saturday at 9am to join us for our town hall event discussing details of the restructure. If you are interested in attending, please send us a DM so we can send you the zoom link!
