An MIT professor spent his career teaching calculus, then went back and recorded five short videos explaining what all of it was actually for.

This is Gilbert Strang, MIT, "Highlights of Calculus." He's taught this material since 1962. These videos aren't a course. They're the summary he wished someone had given him first, before the years of formulas.

Calculus, at the core, is two functions watching each other. One tells you how fast the other one is changing. That's it. Position and velocity. Population and growth rate. Price and rate of change in price. Every calculus class buries that relationship under notation before ever saying it out loud.

Strang starts from the relationship itself, not the rules for finding it. He shows how a distance function and a speed function are just two views of the same motion, and how knowing one lets you reconstruct the other exactly.

Watch how he treats the derivative less like an operation to memorize and more like a question: given how something is changing right now, what does that tell you about where it's going.

Calculus was never really about solving for x. It was a way of catching change in the act, and Strang spends five videos handing that idea back to anyone school buried it under.

Beyond the sessions, the Academy continues to build a growing network of African climate leaders committed to driving accountability, influencing policy, and shaping a climate-resilient future for the continent.

Over four days, the ACEP team, led by Dr. Charles G. Ofori, partnered with the University of Cape Coast and Takoradi Technical University to engage students in interactive workshops on Energy Transition in Africa: Balancing Development and Justice and Natural Gas Management and Commercialisation, facilitated by Dr. Joseph Willie Amoah.

Students explored Africa's evolving energy transition, challenged common misconceptions, and discovered how their diverse fields of study can contribute to a just, sustainable, and industrialised energy future.

As Africa navigates the energy transition, young people have a critical role to play and we're committed to equipping them with the knowledge and skills to lead the way.

Over 54% of Ghanaian households still rely on wood-based fuels, fueling deforestation, emissions, and indoor air pollution. Ethanol stoves offer a cleaner, safer alternative, but we need bold innovation to make them truly accessible.

ACEP invites young innovators to design ethanol-based cookstoves that are: fuel-efficient, affordable, safe, and locally adaptable.

Interested parties may apply individually or in teams (up to five members). Selected winners will receive expert mentorship and national visibility for their innovation, and will share in a total grant funding pool of up to $15,000. The grant and mentorship are intended to help improve the blueprint and produce a sample cookstove.
