The UGHE community gathered at the Kigali Genocide Memorial (@Kigali_Memorial) to mark #Kwibuka32.
Students, faculty, and staff stood in solemn reflection and laid wreaths in honor of more than 1 million innocent lives lost in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
We were deeply privileged to be joined by guest speaker @TomNdahiro, whose reflections brought profound depth to our collective act of remembrance.
#Kwibuka32 is not only a moment to remember; It is a call to unity, vigilance, and a shared responsibility to ensure that such atrocities are never repeated, anywhere, by anyone.

The story of UGHE’s Butaro Campus begins with an act of trust: the gift of land from the Butaro, Burera community.
That gift laid the foundation for us to training the next generation of global health leaders. But the community’s role did not end there. It continues to shape how we learn, teache, serve, and grow.
Through community-based education, local partnerships, and everyday engagement, UGHE students and staff learn from and alongside the community. Together, we connect classroom learning with lived realities, and turn education into action for stronger health systems.
In that same spirit, UGHE hosted Tumenye Kaminuza, a campus open day that welcomed community members, local leaders, community health workers, youth, and residents. The day created space for both the University and the community to share our vision, reflect on progress, and continue a shared journey.
At the heart of this partnership is a common goal: building a better health system where health is treated as a human right.
At UGHE, the community is not just part of the story. It is the foundation.
During Nursing and Midwifery Week, UGHE’s Centre for Nursing and Midwifery brought accompaniment into action.
Through career guidance, sexual and reproductive health education, and menstrual health support, the team engaged nursing and midwifery students, high school students, and teen mothers.
The week was a reminder that care begins with presence: showing up, listening, and walking alongside communities.

Not every emergency begins near a hospital.
In many communities, the first minutes after an injury, burn, road accident, or sudden health emergency can determine what happens next. Yet timely care is often delayed by limited first aid training, lack of basic supplies, and harmful practices that may put lives at further risk.
With the message “First Aid saves lives. Act fast and correctly,” our MGHD Global Surgery Class of 2026 students worked with communities in Butaro to strengthen one of the most important parts of emergency care: the first response.
Over four days, the students delivered locally adapted first aid training, based on the WHO Community First Aid Response Course, to more than 120 community stakeholders. The sessions focused on practical skills, using available everyday resources, addressing harmful practices through open dialogue, and increasing awareness of Rwanda’s national emergency number: 912.

Simulation-based learning, virtual reality, and AI are essential to preparing health professionals for real-world care. It gives learners the chance to practice critical skills, teamwork, and decision-making in a safe environment, before they face high-stakes situations with real patients.
At #UGHE, we are expanding this work through the Centre for Transformative Learning and Technologies, #CTLT, growing the facilities and learning environment needed to support more immersive, collaborative, and technology-enabled training.
