Thanks to Catrin Hannken & Alexander Renner @BMBFSFJ for an inspiring exchange on lifelong learning, adult education monitoring, learning later in life, digital inclusion & financial literacy.
Looking forward to further deepening our collaboration!
Thank you Elmar Eich & Harald Herrmann from the German Federal Foreign Office, for the excellent exchange on German priorities within UNESCO, the pivotal role of UIL and next steps for joint engagement. We are grateful for Germany’s 🇩🇪 longstanding and steadfast support of UIL!
In Berlin, it was an honour to join the celebration of the 75th anniversary of Germany’s accession to @UNESCO and the establishment of the National Commission, alongside the Federal Minister of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, Karin Prien; the President of the German Commission for UNESCO, Maria Böhmer; the State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office, Géza Andreas von Geyr.
This milestone offers an important opportunity to pay tribute to Germany’s longstanding commitment to multilateral cooperation and to UNESCO’s mandate.
Across the country, this commitment is reflected in a rich and diverse UNESCO network — from World Heritage sites, biosphere reserves, geoparks, creative cities and Memory of the World inscriptions, to Associated Schools, university Chairs, Learning Cities, and the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning in Hamburg and the UNESCO International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training in Bonn.
Germany is one of UNESCO’s key partners. Its support is expressed not only through financial contributions, but also through the expertise, dedication and engagement of its institutions, educators, researchers, artists, youth and local communities.
UNESCO is deeply grateful for this partnership, and I look forward to continuing to strengthen our cooperation.

.@UNESCO’s first Higher Education Global Trends Report shows that the number of students enrolled in higher education worldwide has more than doubled over the past two decades, reaching 269 million in 2024.
International mobility has tripled over the same period, with nearly 7.3 million students studying abroad, half of them hosted in European and North American countries. Women now outnumber men in higher education but lag behind at doctoral level. Serious geographical inequalities remain with lower enrolment and completion rates in regions such as sub-Saharan Africa.
