@pwheeler_agent I used the name of Harriet Tubman’s adopted daughter, Gertie and a variation of my great grandmother’s name, Maggie. They live in my words.
@lithub @thaozer I used to sew—one of 4 girls in a family of seven. Once in awhile I make something because it soothes the teenage girl deep within me.
I was rejected this week for a thing I really wanted. And it really stings.
But I'm posting this to let people know that rejection is part of the life of being a writer. And that it happens even to folks with a long career.
It's OK to be sad. Then: You get back to work.
Free reading event next Tuesday evening! My cohort from @poetswritersinc’s inaugural Get the Word Out program will be reading from our 2023 debuts. Come listen!

@QueensMFA short story: Left Behind
Honorable Mention in Jacobs/Jones African America Literary Prize. Gabriel Bump wrote, "A beautiful story about abandonment and hope. The sentences are alive with touch, smells, love and pain. A wonderful experience."
