The Reason why you should be anti-censorship

What happened on Wattapad can happen anywhere. If you’ve been in fandom long enough you know this. This is not the first rodeo. We lost FFnet to censorship. We lost tumblr to censorship. And now wattapad is just the newest victim of people who want to control what you do and think.

You think “oh well wattapad just went too far.” But the reason they were even given the power to do that is because of people who don’t support anti-censorship.

And it starts out harmless. “Oh well they don’t want to support underage. That’s fair, minors shouldn’t be exploited. Oh incest? Well yeah that’s gross. Non con should definitely be censored.” You’re giving them an inch and they just keep going.

In a world that is so hateful towards queer people you don’t think it’s just a matter of time before they censor that too? Then maybe it’s fan fiction all together. You wake up one day and all of your creative freedom is gone.

You act like the world isn’t full of dictators in disguise. People who are just waiting for the right moment to strike.

And if you think it hasn’t happened before think again. There was a fan fiction purge. We woke up to tens of thousands of fics being deleted with next to no warning.

You don’t have to like dark themes. You can have your moral line and police your own experience while still understanding that any form of censorship is a very good way to get people’s right taken away and even killed. Censorship was one of the first things that happened in Germany.

If you don’t think at least the US is headed in that direction every single fucking day, then I dunno what to tell you.

So please think about the big picture when it comes to people’s creative expression. If you censor one thing, you open the door to censor anything.

fanfiction is a rare gem and a solid, living proof that, in a world of tiktok, influencers and content posting, not everything is about money and going viral. art can still be art just for the sake of the artists' pure love, joy and passion for the art they create. fanfic writers write 100k words and more about the characters they love for free. just because they love these characters and the art of writing so much. art is not dead and the world is still beautiful.
