It was an honour to represent @UNDP at the 6th Annual Great Lakes Mining and Energy Transition Mkutano and present awards to Uganda's best-performing Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) cooperatives, recognising their dedication to responsible and sustainable mining. โ๏ธ๐
These cooperatives are showing that when mining is guided by strong governance, respect for human rights and environmental responsibility, it can create safer workplaces, stronger communities and more inclusive economic opportunities for all.
As the global demand for critical minerals continues to grow, investing in people and supporting the formalisation of artisanal and small-scale mining will be essential to ensuring that the benefits of the energy transition are shared equitably and sustainably.
UNDP remains committed to partner with @GovUganda and other stakeholders to advance responsible mineral governance and empower communities to transform Uganda's natural resource wealth into lasting development outcomes.
.@UNDP joined young leaders at the 3rd Annual East Africa Guild Leadersโ Summit at @Makerere, bringing together student leaders from across the region, and stakeholders to reflect on the role of youth in shaping more inclusive, innovative and sustainable societies.
Represented by Governance Team Leader Annet Mpabulungi Wakabi, UNDP engaged in high-level discussions on strengthening youth participation in public governance, advancing innovation and creating pathways for young people to meaningfully contribute to sustainable development across East Africa.
.@UNDP joined partners at the 6th Annual Great Lakes Mining and Energy Transition Mkutano to celebrate and recognize Uganda's best-performing Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) cooperatives for their commitment to responsible, inclusive and sustainable mining practices.
The awards highlighted cooperatives that are demonstrating leadership in strengthening governance, improving safety standards, promoting environmental stewardship and creating better opportunities for mining communities. Their achievements underscore the transformative role that formalised ASM can play in advancing decent livelihoods and community development.
โI would like to appreciate ACP-EU @DevelopmentMin and @UNDPโs support over the years to elevate the mining sector in Uganda through capacity building initiatives such as formalization, training in sustainable mining and business development for mining association.
