Speaking at the Food Systems conference, the Guest of Honour, High Commissioner of Pakistan to Uganda @PakinUganda, H.E. Muhammad Hassan Wazir, said “Climate change is real. While the whole world has been feeling its impact for several years, we in Pakistan witnessed devastation. We recently experienced a large scale cloud burst, severe flood, flash flooding and melting of the glaciers in the Himalayas.
This led to destruction of crops and displacement of millions of people in August 2022. The fabrics of societies and nations are shaken. When agriculture lands become unfit for crop production, it leads to severe imbalance of food systems. While this is a global issue, the solutions are often found in strong bilateral and multi partnerships.”

We five opportunities to address the food systems challenges.
1. Sustainable production: Improving yields, and in particular in this part of the world, focusing on research and development in locally relevant products.
2. Trade: Africa imports food worth US$ 50 billion every year. This is a risk and less reliable. We see boycotts, sanctions, trade embargoes. We see trade disruptions if our food systems are relying on imports, but it is also an opportunity. It's an opportunity for us to take advantage to trade with our neighbors. There's a US$ 50 billion opportunity on the table for us to take advantage of if we improve the productivity and trade networks of our food system.
3. I believe in the importance of good governance and good policy making, but government cannot do everything alone. Government needs to discover. Where can it enable other actors, private sectors and smallholders, to achieve the best, to thrive, produce more trade, better reduce food loss and food waste?
4. Efficiency: Reducing food loss and food waste. In many countries, up to 50% of our food is either lost or wasted.
5. Social protection: There are many people who are in need of support, the most vulnerable in our communities, those displaced by conflict, etc. So we need effective safety net programs to ensure that everyone is able to access safe and nutritious food.

#Thread#MakFoodSecurityConf Keynote speaker Dr Logan Cochrane @PolicyCollege@HBKU, shared an interesting fact “In 2025 there are an equal number of children who are underweight as there are overweight, approximately 10% of the global population of children are underweight and approximately 10% of the global population of children are overweight. What does this mean? This means our food systems are not only insufficient, but they are unhealthy. And this is a call to action that we need to be paying attention to the healthiness, not only the access of our food, but the healthiness of our food systems.”
@MakCAES
.@GovUganda is keenly interested in the global food systems transformation agenda. Uganda is naturally endowed with good soils and weather but we have gaps in embracing this endowment to our benefit, such as the inadequate capacity to harness Science and Technology to our benefit. This is further exacerbated by the effects of climate change. Platforms such as this conference can provide vital answers to help address these and other related gaps - Alex Bambona @MAAIF_Uganda@MakCAES #MakFoodSecurityConf
We're excited to participate in this important international workshop on food systems Transformation for climate actions.
