#YESTERDAY: Coast Guard Cutter Hawser was underway in New York Harbor conducting ongoing icebreaking operations to facilitate the flow of commerce during impacts from ice on the waterways, Feb. 10, 2026. View Here: https://t.co/G13BQKuh25
As temperatures warm this week, please remember that ice on lakes, ponds, rivers, salt water, and tidal water areas can be unstable and dangerous, especially after fluctuating temperatures.
Stay safe and enjoy outdoor activities responsibly as conditions continue to change.
Coastal areas from Massachusetts to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, are expected to have gusts of 30-40 mph and heavy freezing spray this weekend.
Heavy freezing spray accumulates ice on a vessel at a rate of two cm per hour or more. The combination of weather, sea state and vessel movement all cause the icy conditions.
All mariners should prepare for the dangerous accumulation of ice on their vessel. If planning on getting underway, take a look at the warning below to determine a best course and find safe harbor if needed.
Stay safe this weekend!

#YESTERDAY: The crew of CGC Hawser conducted #icebreaking operations near New York City to support safe navigation during winter weather. B-Roll package here: https://t.co/s0kAq4BWnS
Freezing temperatures across the country cannot slow down the @USCG.
With some parts of the U.S. dealing with the most ice they’ve seen in a decade, Coast Guard icebreaker crews are hard at work on missions in the Great Lakes, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic waterways to keep commerce moving and ensure American life continues without interruption. These missions will keep commercial goods like food and fuel flowing throughout the country and keep America going.
From lifesaving evacuations to high-seas interdictions—and now interior icebreaking operations—these heroes more than live up to the Coast Guard motto: Semper Paratus, Always Ready.
NEW B-ROLL: @USCG Cutter Hawser has been conducting icebreaking operations over the weekend in the NY/NJ area. See recent B-Roll here: https://t.co/Cmk36crACW
When winter weather wreaks havoc, @USCG is there to help. This week, our Northeast and Great Lakes personnel braved the cold, breaking ice in ports and waterways to maintain the flow of critical supplies and goods for the American people. In 2025, the Coast Guard facilitated the movement of $5.4T in maritime commerce and 1.8B tons of cargo on U.S. waterways.
Through historic investment in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, we’re transforming our icebreaker fleet and facilitating commerce vital to U.S. economic prosperity and strategic mobility.

Breaking ice to keep America moving.
Winter weather doesn’t stop commerce, or the U.S. Coast Guard.
In 2025, @USCG facilitated the movement of $5.4T in maritime commerce and 1.8B tons of cargo across U.S. waterways. From the Northeast to the Great Lakes, our icebreaking crews ensure critical supplies reach communities, even in the harshest winter conditions. With historic funding from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the Coast Guard is recapitalizing our domestic icebreaker fleet and maximizing our return on investment across America’s waterways.
