The United States is deeply disappointed by the Greek Piraeus Court of Appeals’ decision to release Alexandros Giotopoulos, the leader and mastermind of the far-left Greek terrorist organization 17 November.

Over the course of 27 years, 17 November assassinated four American government employees: Richard Welch, Captain George Tsantes, Captain William Nordeen, and Sergeant Ronald Stewart.  The group also murdered a British military attaché, a Turkish embassy employee, and 16 prominent Greeks, including the brother-in-law of current Prime Minister Mitsotakis.

I was honored to travel to Sofia, Bulgaria this week joined by my friend Mayor Rudy Giuliani to meet President Iliana Iotova, Energy Minister Iva Petrova, and other Bulgarian leaders. We discussed opportunities for advancing our shared energy priorities. Faith and freedom remain enduring bonds between the United States and Greece. I was deeply honored to receive an icon of the Virgin Mary from the fathers of Xenophontos Monastery on Mount Athos - a powerful symbol of the spiritual traditions that continue to inspire Orthodox Christian communities around the world. 
I was especially moved to learn that the icon was painted by Father Pahomios, who created sacred artwork at the St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in New York following the September 11 attacks. The United States remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting religious freedom. 🇺🇸🇬🇷
