Another GLOF induced flash flood in Darail, Gilgit Baltistan, an entire village has disappeared. No loss of life is reported as the people managed to run away, but look at their cattle stuck under a thick layer of sand and debris. The quality of a nation’s debate reflects its intellectual depth. By that measure, Pakistan has a long way to go. At a time when climate change is rewriting the very geography of our lives, there is barely an iota of serious discussion on policy frameworks, mitigation, or adaptation. Weather anomalies are no longer once-in-a-decade freak events m they are the new normal. The question is: what’s the plan from here?

A cursory glance at social media offers little hope. Floods, one of the most visible manifestations of climate vulnerability, are explained away either as the result of Aleem Khan’s housing society (endorsed by Imran Khan) or by Maryam Nawaz’s wardrobe choices and her visit to Japan. This is the level of our national conversation on a crisis that is existential.

This year, Pakistan has faced severe and erratic climate disasters across the country. Cloudbursts, flash floods, urban flooding, and GLOFs have killed hundreds, injured thousands, and caused infrastructure losses worth billions.

The glacier burst, which occurred at Tali Das, triggered landslides that completely blocked the Gilgit-Shandur Road, isolating Raushan village. The Ghizer River has been blocked since 3 a.m., causing further flooding and threatening additional communities with submersion. However, timely warnings issued to residents prevented casualties.

Over 50 people have been rescued so far, according to the GB government spokesperson, Faizullah Firaq. He stated that the blocked river flow has created a substantial artificial lake, posing a serious risk to nearby settlements.
